Teardrops, Meteors and Wild Horses

Postby robfisher » Fri May 23, 2014 10:15 am

Headed out to the desert tonight to watch the meteor shower. Anyone else going out? We'll be out on Poison Creek Road if there are any western Idaho or Eastern Oregon teardroppers who want to come share a primitive BLM site. Just drive up the dirt Poison Creek road South of Homedale Idaho about 7-8 miles past the Poison Creek Stage Stop, and that's where we'll be. So far we have a couple of tears and a tent or two. It's dry camping with no facilities so come prepared. It's also a great place to see wild horses. Last week I saw 20-30 of them.

Should be a perfect night for sky watching.

Well, the meteor shower was pretty much a bust. I did see one very spectacular, slow moving meteor late in the show. And we got to listen to the cries of a lonely coyote. Woke up to the sight of 28 wild horses. And nothing better than a breakfast of potatoes, pancakes and eggs off the coleman. I'd have to say a good time time was had by all three of us at this well attended, inaugural Camelopardalids teardrop event. Maybe next year the meteors will actually show up!

I stayed up to watch it, but the sky was mostly overcast with lots of skyglow from town. After seeing nothing through about mid-peak, I gave up and went to bed. Like you, I hope next year is better. Since it was this comet's first time, it might have been a bit shy about showering in front of a bunch of strangers. ;)
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

It sounds like you had a happy, memorable trip, even if you didn't see much of the meteor showers.
Thanks for sharing. :applause:
