3 different trailers in 3 years?!

Postby George Taylor » Mon May 26, 2014 7:04 am

Are we crazy or just normal. I went and checked out a 2008 Jayco pop up the other day and came home with it. Looks almost new. They said the used it maybe 45 nights since they owned it. They never even used the optinal screen room they bought with it. So in the last 3 years we went from the teardrop (for sale), to a 64 Serro Scotty (for sale
), to the pop up. Don't worry, I will build another tear when our son gets a little older.

The Jayco popups are nice, we bought our daughter a 93 a few years ago but had to replace the canvas. We started with a Starcraft popup, then restored the 46 teardrop, then remodeled a 84 fiberglass Uhaul camper. Have kept all of them, and use all of them.

We have, sitting in the backyard right now, our TD, my old '85 Ford Diesel carrying a '95 SunLite Eagle 8.5' WT pop-up cabover, a '95 Starcraft 8' Meteorite Pop-up trailer, & under the shed at our son's next door, an '84 Scamp 13 that is being (very slowly) re-built. NONE are for sale :D

Yeah m&b. Bought the Scamp a couple of years ago. Axle had absolutely NO flex left in the torsion arms (arms were more than 10 degrees up angle & there were marks where the tires had contacted the wheel wells). I ordered & installed a new Dexter #9, 2K# leading arm w/7" brakes, 22.5 degree down angle. Trailer sits nice now with plenty of clearance in the wheel wells. Still low enough for my 5' tall wife to get in/out without a step, tho I do have a 3" high box with 'astroturf' on the bottom that she uses as a 'step' sometimes ;) . Have been slowly working on the interior, converting front bunks/couch to a 2-person dinette with a cabinet for storing longer items under the front window, so we can leave the rear dinette as a permanent bed. That's going very slowly as I've been unable to find the thickness of oak plywood that I need for the cabinet door rails/stiles. May hafta make do with another thickness. Wanted 3/8" as that's what I used for cabinets in the TD but appears they don't make that anymore  so I'm gonna try 1/2" & just 'narrow' the rails/stiles a little to achieve about the same weight. Wuz gonna try quarter inch but that's too thin to use my 'rounding over' bit for trim without setting the router up in a table with fence & jig. Also gotta add a little fiber glass to the roof vent/emergency exit opening so I can fit a Fantastic Fan or MaxxAir in there. Wife's gonna make new curtains & cushion covers if I ever get around to cleaning/adjusting her old sewing machine. Anyhoo, I'm hoping to have it ready for LCG VIII in Oct.

We have owned our Uhaul 13 close to 3 years now. I installed a Scamp rear window and one side window in it. We also leave the rear bed made up all the time. Front has a captain chair from a Casita and short couch seat. I've read that most Scamps that get new axles go with a trailing arm. Also built a box step for short wife, that I flip over when traveling, set it inside the door, and it holds my wheel chocks, leveling boards, fire extinguisher, and front stabilizer jacks.Made some storage modifications too. We winter in the south in the Uhaul, and alternate between the 3 campers in the summer here in the northeast.
