Hello From Auckland, New Zealand!

Postby Ned » Tue May 27, 2014 8:16 pm

Hi everyone!

I see there are a few more people on here from New Zealand, which is cool! I'll likely pester you all for information on where you got all your supplies from, and to see if i can come prod and poke your teardrops so i can learn from your mistakes rather than make my own haha.

I have been wanting to build a teardrop for a while now. I have a trailer already that i want to use (one i built last year) but i want to build a removable teardrop so i can still use the trailer for normal trailer duties.

I saw another Auckland member here, Bantam, who had a similar idea and we're actually in the same car club as well but didnt realise he was building one. There is actually another few people from the same car club interested as well, sowill make for awesome car events to see a few teardrops together! I will be using my early 80's Toyota Starlet as the tow vehicle of choice, so the camper has to be quite small, which is a problem because i'm 6'5" so want 7' of sleeping room somehow :)

Some pictures of the car and the trailer

No suspension, and it's just a little bit low to the ground. Not expecting a huge success, but only time will tell!
Quite keen to use a steel frame to keep it light weight and small as well, and hame minimal wall thicknesses. I will only use it when the weather is nice so not too worried about building one with thick walls in plenty of insulation. As long as i dont need to setup a tent, and i'm dry, i'm happy!

Lets just hope i actually start this project and dont just dream of building one for the next few years.

Regards,

Ned

Hi Ned, It's great to have a new friend in NZ. For some reason, Teardroppers seem to be very cool. I'm sure you'll fit in well. Enjoy Chris.

Glad you joined,
I hope to see photos of your travels around New Zealand when your teardrop's finished. I visited for 3 weeks in 1973 and loved your country. I will go back as soon as I get my kidney transplant and I can travel overseas again.
Good luck in your build!
Charles

In 2016, I received a kidney transplant, finished my teardrop, and took it on the road! In 2017 I sold it and am back to car camping.
Thanks to all forum members who provided advice about my build and posted info to help me get started.

With no springs, I take it you would be having low air in the tires to soften the ride. With the rail in front doors may be a problem an less you reverse your teardrop (bed in the back?) With a bed in the back and galley (with a fold down counter) in the front you would be able to build a little over the hitch. Yes the hitch would be in the way  , but you could have a cooler in the car and not have to move it.
Just thinking out loud.

Thanks everyone. Ive decided to build a new trailer. I want to build an 8x5 trailer with a 9' long teardrop that's 4' high, and nice and low, but not as low as the old trailer and with suspension this time!

I've saved up some pennies and hope to start soon!
