No trees, use high lift jack shaft.

You're welcome, KC. When will you be traveling to the far North? 8)
Blow out a rubber isolator on a flex axle and how are you going to fix that? With a leaf spring if something breaks you at least have a chance of lashing a branch (or something) to the spring with rope or a cargo strap, and you can limp your way to help.
I've thought of two or three ways to temporally repair a torsion axle. However, from what I've read, rubber failure is so rare as to be not much of a concern. BTW, Dexter now offers replacement spindles on Torflex axles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfe_5J1nPO8

No plans to go that far north at the moment, but I will be traveling off the beaten path in the wilds of Idaho. Your descriptions do make it sound like a fabulous adventure, so thank you again for sharing.

Probably true, but when I did my research a few years ago there were some reports of rubber failures in some other off road/expedition type forums. That new replaceable spindle is pretty nifty. I hadn't seen that. Thanks for sharing.

The trick is to not allow it to bend. That's what the skins are for. The foam is just a spreader to keep the fibers that do the work separated!

That’s the trick !!! The more I read about this Alaska expedition trailer , the more I think it would require a little more specialized trailer than just a Foamie ... Boat trailers are pretty Tough ,easy to get parts for , the good ones anyway ... thinking tandem for reliability , and some kind of HD rock and ice guard up front ... :o

 Dang, are you guys telling me I can't build a foamie & take it back to Alaska this winter for skijoring to the hot springs when most of the grizzlies are asleep?
