Quoting Ira: And to all the newbies considering doing the same, all I can say is, you're NUTS. These two stupid fenders have expanded into a 6-week project.

I was going to build wild fenders, but as I watch others, I am going to admire their efforts and stick with some simple fenders for my build -- and then go camping with the time left over.

Maybe on the 3rd of 4th tear!

No disrespect at all, Dave, but Ira doesn't expect to hear things like:

"Yeah, not everyone can be a craftsman and a perfectionist like Ira."

:pipe: Though perhaps, more accurately, that should be:

"Yeah, not everyone can be a craftsman, a perfectionist and a beer drinker like Ira."

Building custom fenders does take some time...sometimes it takes a LOT OF TIME. But, the results can be well worth the effort if they enhance the appearance rather than just being utilitarian. They can be sort of a signature on your project.

Ira is the beer holder. He only puts it down when he need both hands to take pictures.

You just HAD to show me that TV, didn't you! It would mount PERFECTLY between the openings in my front cabinet.

And getting back to my fenders--I guess rope it is. I figure I'll tie off the ends with clear fishing line. (Any other ideas?)

Also, what's really, really thin that I can use to squeeze/tuck the fish netting under that trim? A paint scraper?

I know nothing about his beer drinking, and the fenders are absolutely wonderful, but I know all about 2 day projects that end up taking 6 months.

This time, I'll admire Ira's, and learn from his experience. I have plenty of "6 month projects" on the burner, and I am just beginning my tear building project.

Once these fenders are on, I never want to look at them again!

By the way, since this is my thread, let me hijack it:

I'm going to have to cap off the ends of the side ropes, otherwise the strands will come apart. Although I was thinking of just using clear fishing monofilament, that’s kind of blah looking. Not gawdy enough for me.

Any idea where to look in HD for something that will do this and look okay? Like, don’t they sell caps for chair feet, that kind of thing, that may match the rope diameter?

Also, how to attach the rope? Glue, fasten the rope with screws, then remove screws? Or just strategically use nice screws?
Here we go again!

Ira,
could you do a whip finish with some masons string? It comes in white, yellow and hot pink. Gawdy enough?
To attach the rope have you thought of using GOOP? my interior trim is held up with the stuff. maybe a bit of GOOP and a few nails to temporarily hold it in place till the glue dries.

Hey just a thought.

C'mon Ira, finish them off with a Turks Head tied with florescent pink mason's twine. That ought to catch everyone's attention...

I like the way you carried yout traier theme throughout the whole build. Looks great! What size of rope do you plan on using on the fenders? You could use the copper caps used in plumbing if they are small enough. Glue them on. They would weather quite nicely over time. Just an idea....
I cut it three times and it's still too short!!

Ohhhh---------

That sounds easy and CHEAP! Thanks for the idea!

AND I CAN ACTUALLY FIND THE PLUMBING DEPARTMENT AT HD ALL BY MYSELF!

I think the rope is 3/4", may be an inch, the same that's used along my roof line.

But even if the cap is somewhat less, I could still cut a slit in the hidden side and squish that rope in there.
