I found a Reese hitch assembly for my 2001 Focus at a local discount store for $20. the hitch assembly through bolts to the spare tire well at a couple of points and also has two U shackles that go through the metal rear bumper (yes there is a metal channel inside all that plastic and foam) I installed it myself in a couple hours, and even used some of the extra parts in the kit to reinforce the wheel well mount a bit more.
In the US the Focus did not change until 2012, so the hitch assembly is the same 01-11.
The Focus had the lower powered engine (single valve intake) but it was never lacking for power, even when towing my tear.
I miss that car, we sold it with over 250,000 miles on it, and it just finally when to the scrapper with over 300,000 miles on it. the clutch finally died and it wasn't worth fixing. It still had the original timing chain, and never needed much work other than the brakes and oil. The rh cv shaft seal leaked from the tranny, so I had to top off the tranny oil each year. You can't beat a car that gets 35 mpg and only cost $10k new.
