Slim(ish) bedding

Postby OreoGaborio » Fri Jun 27, 2014 10:25 am

Hi all! First post here.

Looking for affordable recommendations for an affordable bedding solution for my 14x7.5 cargo trailer that'll be comfortable for my girlfriend an I.

Currently I'm using a queen sized air mattress on a collapsable cot platform type thing, but it's too big & uncomfortable... I want to get away from fragile air mattresses and air pumps.

I'm considering something like a 4" foam mattress topper on a plywood platform that I can mount on a piano hinge to fold up against the wall, but I question whether or not a foam mattress topper will be firm enough?

Reason for thinking about foam is I will order it in a full size, then trim a few inches off the side to fit in the amount of wall room I have (50" wide vs typical 54" for a full size mattress)

Any recommendations?

What about a futon? That would give you a bed and a sofa in one easy package, and I'm guessing you would have more space and headroom for that than in a small teAr...

Another variation is that many vw campers have something called a rock and roll bed, again it switches from sofa to bed, but is fixed to a frame. You can certainly get kits here in the uk, sure you can there...

Thought about it, but I'm using this trailer primariy to haul two motorcycles... get to the track, bikes come out, bed goes down. 8)

Bed's gotta fold flat against the wall (sideways), thus looking for something 3-4" thick, but firm enough to be comfortable. Are mattress toppers firm enough to be used by themselves or are they like lying on marshmallows?

I found my 4" foam twin at a mattress store. Look for those flyers in the mail that promise $50 mattresses. Bit of a bait-and-switch if you want a REAL bed, but perfect for a camper.

I think I really shocked the sales guy buy actually buying it! :)

We used a foam one from walmart. It is a 6". I cut it to fit. It was @$150 i think.

to avoid bottoming out see if you can find a spring type mattress support instead of a flat sheet of plywood. Look at the support for a murphy bed, it is all springs around the edges like a trampoline, with metal links to support the mattress.
It makes a kind of flat box spring for a thinner mattress.

We've got 5" of foam from the Foam Factory topped with 2" of memory foam. It's as good as our bed.

After trying many different ones I am now using a 6inch memory foam brand spa sensensations from Walmart. It has partial foam and memory foam. And the wife and I are very happy. When we had the 4 inch we ended up putting those foam interlocking mats under it. We cut ours down with a filet knife and it cut like butter

Good... 4" is as thick as I'm willing to go.

EDIT: This what you went with? http://www.thefoamfactory.com/mattress/ ... ional.html

Hmmmm... I could do 2" of their Lux High Quality Foam with 2" of their top of the line memory foam combined to make a full size mattress, plus cover for 206 shipped...
