How rare are those fiberglass trailers?

Postby runfrombears » Sun Jun 29, 2014 3:20 pm

There is one for sale locally. A 1989 at $2,000, much cheaper than everything else i've seen. However it's very simple and probably ugly to most people. I am a complete newbie to Teardrops. I am driving a 2004 Corolla so the lighter the better and I don't need anything special like electricity (thats what flash lights are for) Just looking for one step up to a tent, while still retaining great gas mileage.

Does anyone know how much those American Fiberglass trailers weigh? And are they popular or rare?

Thanks so much!

There was a 1989 model 15ft. Scamp for sale here near Knoxville for $3,400. I think they are really cool and you don't see them very often so I'd say they are somewhat rare.

A little off topic but.......wife and I were looking at campers this weekend and went into one of those type campers, it was this:

http://www.trilliumtrailers.com/

The fiberglass smell was overwhelming when we got inside. It smelled like the resin had just been mixed it was so bad. Does the smell go away with time? Granted, it was close to 90 degrees in the sun and that likely made a difference.

I think what you might be referring to is the Teardrop American, a pod-like teardrop molded from vacu-formed Rovel (not fiberglass), that has gull-wing doors and molded-in sink area and such in the galley. They are very light-weight (we have a friend that pulls his with a Scion xB (that toaster-looking thing) and does quite well. They are not un-common, but not real common, either. In the mid-80's they were made in Canada, then later in (I believe) Wenatchee, WA for the remainder of their run.

There is a similar genuine fiberglass model from the early '60s that is very rare, very desirable, and very cool, but they were only made for a couple of years.

For what you intend, I think the Teardrop American would be a good choice ... light-weight, durable, and easy to tow. Good Luck, and as always ...

Modern made fiberglass trailers by Boler are very common in British Columbia. I saw lots (1 in every campground almost) on my recent trip up there.

I haven't seen many of them here on the US West Coast though.

Scamp makes a 13' and a 16' fiberglass camper. Weights run around 1000# for the 13 and 1800# for the 16, final weight all depending on what you pack in it. We still use our teardrop, but a couple years ago bought a 13' Uhaul fiberglass camper for longer term camping. It weighs 1250 empty according to the title, never had it weighed. We go south for the winter with the Uhaul. They were only made for a couple years, 1984 & 85, rented until around 1992 and then sold. Apparently not a profitable venture for Uhaul.

Lets start in the beginning.

Everybody here is more than willing to help you here.

But ya gotta be more specific.

Which one of "Those" Fiberglass Trailers are you talking about?

Some are, and some aren't.

What I'm curious about... :) is why well meaning people join message boards to ask questions/get information that they feel they need, but then don't show back up for days, weeks, or sometimes ever?
If it was important enough to post, why wouldn't it be important enough to check back and respond to those who went out of their way to offer help, at least daily?

Maybe people get sick, or get in an accident, or just forget that they asked the question.

They may be gone, but...

This is one step up from a tent, and has other uses too. I bought one for my nephews to use, and I'm taking it to a car rally late in July:

Might be a good choice for someone with only a small car and limited budget.
