Taking the slow and steady option... Made it to within 10 miles of the grove and ran into Road Closed! Oversize load tipped over! Had a two hour backwoods adventure to Garberville. Just made it to 101...another hour to the grove ! Avoid this route if you can!

OMG! I am not surprised, we drove that Highway in April, in a little car... and it was a twisty turning highway!! there was a semi truck stuck on what of the pass's luckily we were able to get by...

It's amazing to see how many logging trucks take that road. I drive up towards Platina sometimes on an extension/off-shoot of it. It always surprises me when I pass one of those logging trucks, even on the "good" end of that quiet "highway". I'm thinking of just taking the car (no trailer) from Hwy273, near Platina, all the way to Carlotta just so that I can see what everyone talks about.

Most logging trucks are designed with a joint in the middle of the trailer that makes the rear wheels follow in the same tracks as the front. The metal tube underneath these loads is actually part of the steering mechanism for the back tires. Watching closely you can see how it works.



Some are even controlled remotely or have a second driver in the back. I believe this one is controlled from the cab possibly by a single driver. These can perform maneuvers that are close to miracles.



A unique aspect of hauling logs or pipe is that the load itself often provides some of the structure that keeps everything lined up. As you can see, a log/pipe truck with a competent operator can negotiate some surprising turns. Unfortunately, people make mistakes, equipment can fail, and bad things can happen. What blocked the road was 1/2 of a modular type building. The driver couldn't swing the tractor far enough to the left to make the corner and dropped the rear axles off the side of the road and got hung up. The logging trucks on this road are just the standard type tandem axled trailer on the rear. Doug
