How much of a difference did you notice between Spanish spanish
and the variety that is spoken on this side of the 'Pond' ?
Reason I ask is been lookin' at the Rosetta Stone folks to help me
get started and they offer 2 versions. Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, twer I you, I'd get the Castillian version because the Spanish use a lot of the "vosotros" form in their verb conjugations. Latin Americans generally do not.

In northern Spain, Spanish is almost everyone's second language. In and around Barcelona the first language is Catalan. In and around Pamplona it's Basque (not from Latin like the others). In and around Leon, it's Leonese (almost Spanish). In the northwest, in Galicia it's Galician (almost Portuguese).

Wherever I went, people said, "Are you Mexican?" My Spanish is. Kinda like being from Texas and going to New York City and opening with "Howdy. How ya all doin?"

Judging from what you are saying no one in Spain speaks Spanish .... they all speak different basic languages or at least the vast majority anyway...
Living in SW N.M. I reckon I'll go with the 'Howdy ya'll' version and get some of the locals to help me out with the syntax ...
That and I don't think I'll be headed to Europe any time soon...

From Madrid south it's all Castillian Spanish. And everyone in the north speaks fluent Spanish as a second language that they learned in school.
