OH NO! Its happening all over again!

Well the saga begins!

Just purchased a 1963 Serro Scotty Trailer from my good friend Theresa. Drove up to E. Hartford, CT. to get it, left Thursday and got there at about 3;30pm.

First off I Love Theresa, and as soon as I got there she hustled me and her brother Gerry off to a private pond where we caught a Plethora of Fish. A great beginning to a very relaxing weekend.

Left Sunday morning at 6am towing the Scotty on a flat bed.

Made it to within 2 miles of my house and my Truck broke down. A 600 mile trip! (so close but so far) Tow truck, AAA, leave the trailer, borrow another truck, come back for it Yaddi Yaddi Yadda.

Long story short, I'm in my shop by 1pm. Record time for a Rescue.

But I digress.

The trailer needs an entire rehab and hopefully by Tuesday night will be nothing but a frame.

I will be modeling this trailer after a one and only prototype of the Scotty Hilander And calling it a "Hi "Len" der.

This will be a 13' Hilander! I know all you Scotty fans out there are saying " Hey! Hilanders were 15'?" Well the prototype HiLander was a 13' and they only made ONE.

Now there will be TWO.

I look forward to following along on another Len master build!

I am curious, though. It seems that there is very little that will carry over from the original to the recreation; the chassis, perhaps some hardware, but the skins, framing, cabinets, almost everything else... even if it wasn't rotten and/or dinged up... wouldn't be of use anyway due to the different profile, correct? I'm assuming that you got it just for the chassis to maintain that vintage vibe?

Or are there a bunch of other items that will be able to be salvaged and reused?

That's just about right KC. Primarily the frame, windows and a few Knick-Knacks.

Another thing, I'm a much better Builder than I am a Restorer. And I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Its going to look like the Prototype in Profile only. I'm extending the frame 6" to accommodate a standard mattress, moving the axle accordingly and there won't be a galley inside just a goucho bed in the rear, dinette in the front and where the galley was will be the typical "Scotty Potty" room as on the bigger HiLanders.

Heres a cutaway of a 15' Scotty "J" model, same floor plan as a Hilander "Scotty Potty" room. The room will end at the left of the door.





Under the rear bed on the outside will be a roll out galley instead of inside. These trailers are just to small to cook in anyway.

My brother has a Hilander and that extra height in the rear and that extra bunk makes a great place to store things during the day. In my 13' Scotty it was like a constant game of Tetrus moving things so you could move things and the trailer always looked a mess.

Turning the dinette into a bed in my little Puck was, in reality, a piece of cake. But I found it a chore anyway. I always wished for a separate bed.

Un Planned "Left Turn"!

Well as I looked at my frame from my 1963 Scotty I knew it would take a lot of modification to make it ready to start. The big thing was cutting the frame at the door way and dropping it to match the inside drop floor.

A real PITA job but one that I was willing to do.

Then in a fit of boredom I pulled out another Scotty frame I had, 1969, 15'er and placed it next to the 63, 13'. As I looked at both frames side by side in my "Research and development mode" Or as my kids call it "Drinkin & Thinkin" I realized they were so similar that it would be easier and stronger if I were to make the 15'er my frame for the "One & Only" other than to adapt the 13'er.

The 15'er already had the dropped stair, it was already sand blasted and "Tared", The axle had to be moved but I'm getting a new axle that will have to be reinstalled any way, chop about 18" off the back of the frame and I'm done!

So now the 13'er will be shelved and scheduled for a standard Scotty Sportsman rebuild in the winter.

Laugh if you will but "Research and Development" does pay off.
