Funny you should ask Slow. I just got back from a 2 week trip with 2 other Tear Jerkers. We spent a week in KN. and one in TN. Our first stay was at Natural Bridges in Slade KY. The park was full. At least half the sites were full of tents. But it was so quiet we even commented to each other how strange that was. There was not even any wild life to be seen or heard. We even joked maybe there was nuclear waste buried in the park.

Then we moved to the Cedars of Lebanon near Nashville TN. Bigger park , fewer campers and was it ever noisy. Kids screaming and crying, dogs barking, and parents yelling at the dogs and kids. Even on Sunday night when most of the park was open it still was really loud.

I never would be noisy just to get even. All that does is annoy the other considerate campers.

One of the advantages of ours is 1.5" of insulation and yes we have both a TV/DVD and a stereo hooked up to a XM satellite receiver so we get music where ever. Some times you just grin and take the "neighbors" for the entertainment value.

We are considerate quiet campers and hope for the same from others. To that end we have local spots tucked away that take us from the campgrounds (that often means dry camp) and one or two campgrounds that don't attract the party camper types. If we want to hear neighbors/TV/stereo/etc...we will simply stay home. The bride and I camp to escape the city, not bring it with us.

I have a small Bluetooth speaker. I play it just loud enough to hear it....usually orchestral music. Nothing loud. I'll walk away from the campsite to about my neighbors distance....if I hear it, the volume goes down.

I camp to get away from noise....not create it. I can't stand barking dogs, and screaming misbehaving kids. Play is one thing....screaming and carrying g on is another.

The one thing I would pay more for when it comes to camping is trees and scrub growth. The both deaden sound. My hearts desire is to find 10 acres to call my own....my rules....my privacy.

I wish more people understood what my dog does,,,,camping voice. They don't make noise either. It just takes training.

I prefer state and county parks, stay away from campgrounds known as the local party place. Typically state and couinty parks post quiet time, are usually known to enforce the rule. Great being in a park that asks guests to leave because the guests chooses to be very loud.

Barking dogs is a different subject. Grrrr.

Do the folks that say they don't like to hear screaming children - have children? Or do they mean they don't like to hear other folks screaming children because their children walk on water? Just a question?

I snipped some verbiage from your post.... Call me irresponsible, but if my neighbors get too unruly, noisy, or generally obnoxious (judgment based on my naturally obnoxious, unruly, sometimes noisy - cars and powertools can be noisy) self, then I have been known to escalate in retaliation. At least I used to. For instance: while driving, I had super-bright off-road lights aimed to catch the oncoming cars that wouldn't dim theirs, and the same lights under my rear bumper to get the tailgater with brights on. Another example: at dragstrips, where everyone is expecting noise from the generators, unmuffled cars, and the track announcer/loudspeaker trying to be heard over all that, once in a while someone next to your pit would turn up their stereo, usually with Rap crap or Hip-hop, and make the din even worse. At that point, I would move my generator(s) as close as possible to the offenders, and drown them out. Fight fire with fire! Now, among more civilized! campers, I will try to behave, but If I need to run my generator, then I will (if I have a choice of campsites, I will always try to park on the fringe, with my genny pointing away from the demographic core of the campsite). And I'll be happy to share the power generated by it.

Umm. Please check yourself. Rude is rude. Kids are kids. Rude kids are caused by rude parents. Camping does not equal camp run amok.

And I only know 2 people who have walked on water...one one fell. I don't try. But I do expect common respect especially when camping. The same respect I give my neighbor. 5 campsites away, is too far away to be listening to their music. Want that? Go home.

The state park system in Indiana is self policing and addresses problems at the park level and takes the neighbor vs neighbor out of the problem. 11 pM is designated as quiet time and can be softly enforced by the ranger if he feel it is necessary. Our last gathering I was unfortunate enough to pick a site and failed to notice the children's play area within a rocks throw away. The kids climbed and crawled over the equipment all day long and at times it was a minor irritation but come dark it was as quiet as a tomb. I don't think I have ever been assaulted by a noisy neighbor to the point of irritation.
I do have a pet peave with the guy that is afraid of the dark and hoists a 2000 watt light into a tree for a security light. It's hard to enjoy the stars when you have to wear sunglasses at midnight.

I think most of us would agree that there is a difference between a crying baby, or a child shouting in play, vs a screaming temper tantrum or a child whose parents are disengaged. And, if I may say so, the more irritating of the noises is when the parent of that child is screaming at him to shut up.

Anyway, we have VERY seldom had issues with excessive noise. If we camp at a popular park on a holiday weekend, we expect lots of activity (with the corresponding noises) during the day, but generally speaking, things quiet down at night. If not, that is what the campground host or ranger is for.

The "white" noise from our ceiling fan blocks most of it, so we can even nap during the noisy daytime. However, we do most of our camping in the shoulder season, when campgrounds are not as heavily utilized.

There's noise and then there's NOISE. We have children (adults now) and encouraged them to respect their neighbors...especially when camping. Basic rules like don't walk through other camps uninvited etc. Rude kids are normally dim a reflection of their rude parents...the tree does not grow far from the apple. :)

Were they perfect? Oh heck no but if the imperfection was rebellion it was exorcised from them through the seat of their understanding. I doubt any here were referencing normal background children playing noise but suspect they were referring to children sounding more like a Coyote pack than youngsters respectfully enjoying themselves. Whether or not one personally has children or not does not alter the rule of good manners anyway.

The reason I travel/camp on a dual sport motorcycle and we hammock camp (we are looking into a TD) is to get far away from the crowded and noisy party spots to enjoy the sound of nature instead of Hip Hop. To that end we tend not to join in things like group camps and rides unless the group shares our enjoyment of the great outdoors over the party life.

I'm pretty easy to get along with...at least I think so. I've only had one camping neighbor who was too loud. I don't have kids and I can be pretty tolerant of their noise, but I sure don't want to be right next to a playground or a pool. I figure that I may make some noise that others don't like (not intentionally), so I just let it go. BUT the guy in PA who was very inebriated and was chopping wood at 2:30 am does not get a pass from me. I did mention it to the office the next morning as I was leaving. Nope, I wasn't dumb enough to confront a drunk with an axe!! And for those who know my dog, Sunny Day, can you believe she was actually growling at the guy??? She has never growled at a human before!!

My children, and now my grandchildren are not perfect, and do not walk on water, neither do any that I have ever known.
As has been covered, there is a big difference between playtime noise normal childen make, and the noise unsupervised, severely lacking in attention, children make.

My children, and grandchildren are simply not allowed to "do as they please".
They are supervised, monitored, and corrected if their activities in any way even begin to mess with any other campers privacy or right to peaceful enjoyment.

It really is very simple, be nice, show some consideration, and camping with a hundred other folks can be a lot of fun.

I like the quote above; "rude kids are caused by rude parents"...
Same goes for dogs...

Rob

I would also suggest that anyone who feels a need to do "payback" by creating a louder noise, etc, needs to re read the quote above, and consider which category they really want to be in.
If there is a problem, deal with the problem, don't create yet another problem. ;)
Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...
