I don't camp in campgrounds anymore, but I have in the past... A lot. I think the thing that bothers me the most about campgrounds now is the "privatization or selling" of our national forest campgrounds to concessions. It burns me to see a private business running OUR public land campgrounds for a huge profit.

I can think of one CG that I was last at in the Uintas a year or so ago. There are no hookups or special services provided, it is the same campground as before with the same pit toilets, no pads, no water etc. Where before it used to be free to park at the trailhead, and $5 to camp, now it is $15 to camp. There isn't even a campground host. No one is there. You also get to pay a day use fee if you park in the trailhead gravel lot. I paid $3 per day to Am L&L for the privilege of leaving my car in a National Forest Trailhead Parking lot that our tax money built. I might think differently if the lot was patrolled or had some kind of security. But again no change in anything there other than cost. So for a week of hiking you get to pay $21 to leave your car. And just exactly what service did they provide???

They haven't built anything, fixed anything, or improved anything. Instead of the Forest Service collecting the money out of the self pay pipes and the money going to improving the campground, it now goes to American Land and Leisure to improve their overhead. Sure it may cost them a little to empty the dumpster and pump out the pit toilets at the end of the year, but from what I have seen the cleaning and supplying of things like TP has gone down. :?

Rant over. I'll get back on my meds.

Here's is a couple more ...

This may be a up north thing....but its annoying when campgrounds are only open Memorial Day to Labor Day. What's up with that? Tourist season extends to the shoulder seasons anymore and lots of people camp early spring and late fall.

Cousin Eddy...Why leave fire pits filled up with trash, beer cans, ashes, and half burned wet wood. A little respect here? And please go to the outhouse or toilet...no need to leave toilet paper and diapers back in the brush near your spot.

Cindy,

Not so sure you need any...?

If the government lets private business take over campgrounds, etc. because they are loosing money, but private business can make a profit, then something is wrong with the system government uses to run it's "business".
Nothing new about that thought...

The barking dog annoying as it is, is secondary to sharing their music!

+ 2 on that! Boondocking is my favorite camping. That is where the only person you can blame for something not going right is yourself!

Last weekend I was scouting out this spot for camping on BLM land in southern Utah. No fees, no people, no electrocuting showers, no problem!

Ahhh, I shall put one of those hooky thingies in with the shower things. I plan to take a dry bag with me from now on. That, plus the hooky thing will keep stuff dry.

My whine? I hate reservations. I don't like having to plan. That's just me, but i really hate the fact that other people actually do plan ahead so there is no spontaneity to be had anymore, much, kinda. I can't take off and camp in any state parks on the coast this time of year, or some of the other ones, because, they have all been reserved. Oh well.

Things that bother me about Camp Grounds

Postby GerryS » Thu Jul 31, 2014 6:00 am

I think your right about spontaneousness. On our first ever camping trip we didn't know about reservations and we just drove...used a cell phone and GPS to call various campgrounds and had a great time. It actually worked out well since initially we planned on staying for a few days at one place. It was fine, but we said "hey, let's roll....let's explore" and found ourselves in the next state south the next day.

That night (in the next state) we discovered the place we were staying was hit by very high winds and rain, possibly a EF1 tornado. If we had stayed, we likely would have suffered major damage.

I wish we had been able to wonder on our last trip...next long one we go on, I think well try "Indian time" travel again....I forgot how fun that was. There's always a place to stop...it just might be another 30 minutes away....except perhaps on holiday weekends.

On to the post, the one thing I hate about campgrounds is getting packed between 2 class As. We avoid roadside sardine campgrounds at all cost...and what's funny, the the ones off the path are usually cheaper.

The most annoying thing I have run across while out and about was going to the shower....trying to turn on the water...then only to find out it was gonna cost me $2 in QUARTERS for 8 mins. Found this one at a campground near the entrance to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon...C'mon, like i didn't pay enough to begin with but if they were hurting that bad...add a few more bucks so I don't have to hoard quarters.

Nancy's comment when we were walking and discussing this thread was that her biggest complaint is out of control kids. Not playing but as an example from Mohican State Park where they were near the swimming pool riding across the road (main entry) with out looking...

I would like to add ,super bright park lights. Usually near the shower house but sometimes out among the sites. The kind of lights that cast a shadow at 100 yards.

Here is one....It was October and this light was on 24 hrs a day. We talked to the camp host about it and he said that lots of people complained about it. We turned it into a ghost during our stay. It was then only slightly annoying.

Generators in National Parks. Many NPs don't have electric available. At 8 am it is a symphony of generators starting up all at once. People in big rigs that can't function without their toasters, electric coffee makers, and TV watching the clock for the magic start up time. What starts out as a peaceful sunny morning is soon turned into an exhaust filled smog ground with nothing but noise. :x Why do they bother to go camping if they spend the day inside their home on wheels watching TV?

People that don't understand anything about campfires. I've seen them burning big fires in the middle of the day at its 90 degrees, ripping out brush dousing it with lighter fluid, massive bonfires when its windy and the ever popular, leaving a fire unattended. Their stupidity puts a lot a risk.

A few of us brave souls went out early in March ( mid 20's F) and it was cold but we had a great time. We had one neighboring camper who was packing up to leave and just before departing deposited the remaining pile of firewood ON THE FIRE! AND I DO MEAN PILE !

What were they thinking.

We went over as soon as they left and removed what we could and doused the rest, what a bunch of morons.
