Build sequence - is this basically right?

Postby DoctahDeane » Mon Aug 04, 2014 1:47 pm

Had to put my build on hold for a bit but getting back now. This is a woody. Platform is built, sides are cut and sanded and next, I will order doors and cut the openings for them. At that point should I be fiberglassing first and them popping in the doors and the outside lights, vent fan and so forth? I think that is the way to go and to keep water out it would seem to make the most sense but none of the build manuals I have explicitly state this. I would appreciate any basic workflow suggestions. Thanks folks, I hope everyone has been having a great summer.

It sounds like you're on the right track. Fiberglass can be a bit gooey & messy, so it's best to make all of your penetrations first, just a "dry run" on all of the openings, to make sure everything goes together properly and fits like you want it to. If there is any interior finish already done, or metal frame stuff which can get splattered, make sure to mask off anything you don't want to get the resin on. That way you can concentrate on the work at hand, without having to stop in the middle to clean up. It's easier to peel tape off of something than sand down epoxy!

Basically, you want to have the entire outside completely finished prior to the "trim out" of the doors, windows, vents, lights, etc. This would include paint and trim. The last step is putting it all back together again once the paint is dry.

The time you spend planning is more important than the time you spend building.........
