Teardrop for the dogs

Postby Chuckles » Sun Aug 03, 2014 11:35 pm

Just went camping for a week and had to find a friend to house/dog sit. We would like to take the dogs with us but, despite having a standy, two people and two full size dogs in the trailer seem like a little much.

I seem to remember seeing a picture or thread about a separate smaller teardrop for the dogs but I can't find it by searching. Is there anyone out there who does this? How difficult is it doing a double tow?

Building isn't as bad as towing.

Depending in the state you are driving in, you may or may not be allowed to tow 2 trailers. I know of one person who (legally mind you) was towing 2 trailers, got stopped anyway while the cops took an hour to determine it was legal before they were allowed to go. No fine, but still time lost.

I don't know of it's worth the trouble. But if you do. I'd make sure to carry the specific code of law for each state you pass through, less the mirrored sunglasses of justice look at you.

Not to mention you tow vehicles capacity.

Try getting some of the wire dog crates. They fold up flat and you could either store them on top of your vehicle or on a rack on the back of car or camper. Adds a little weight but better than the inconvience of double trailers. We use them all the time for our dogs and they get use to them very quickly. A little piece of canvas over them at night keeps them quiet and dry if it rains. Larry

Oh Yeah. Never haul your dogs in the camper. Use the camper for your stuff and the dogs in the car with you.

I agree with LWW, get the fold-flat crates.
Our dog rides in hers, and then when we get to camp, we set up a small tent for her that the cage fits (barely, it takes two people to work it through the door and only before the rain fly goes on, I lucked out that it fits at all) inside. She snores the night away on the other side of the camp site from us.

Here we are leaving the CRA in 2011. It really tows like a dream. I would be hesitant to tow across state lines unless I researched the double towing laws for the states involved.

Here was my secret a manual push and shove reversing system. :D

I have just finished talkin to the local police, Seems you can do it in GA, The state has lots of laws but as long as it is within a certain length it is ok. what we with small trailers like Teardrops the Captain says that its ok, He pulls his camper and boat all the time.

Well, how about one of these instead? No need to tow and stows well.

Thanks for all the ideas. Although I doubt the "claw proof" screening would survive more than a few nights with my dogs. While a cute little doggie drop is a neat idea I think the fold flat crate in a separate tent is a good idea. Never even thought about the folding crate... we have a couple large kennels but cant fit them in the tow vehicle or through the door of the camper. A BIG folding crate to fit both dogs should work  And now I have a use for that tent we no longer use.

Can you add a reciever hitch to the back of your teardrop? Then put one of those wire basket cargo haulers in the receiver. (Not sure of the actual name of then) Then build a small tear that can be hauled on it to camp.

A receiver basket to haul the mongo sized collapsible crates would work well.. You could even pack an EZ up back there just for the dogs.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Actually you could just bungie cord it to a bike rake using a receiver on the back of the teardrop. My wife and I go to the dog shows a lot and most of the big time show people carry 3 or 4 X pens on the front of there vans using a hitch receiver with rack. They weigh a little more than single large crate it works great.Larry

All good ideas  . I do plan on having a receiver hitch put on the ttt for a bike rack. I have to be careful about how much weight I put back there because I'm a little "heavy in the rear" as they say ;) . I Plan on putting a cooler rack on the tongue so I can put the adult beverage cooler up there for balance.
