Things that bother me about Camp Grounds

Why more places don't make bathroom doors outswinging is beyond me.
(along with bathrooms that have inswinging doors with no paper towels...)

I've got a long list but I'll keep it to my top pet peeves.

Unsupervised small children and pets. Please keep an eye on and control your kids and pets. Both tend to get in trouble when left on their own. I haven't been to a campground that didn't have a sign stating "Dogs will be on a leash" Yet we see it every time we go camping.

Loud music. One of the things we enjoy while camping is listening to the sounds of the forest. You know the bubbling river, birds chirping, wind rustling through the trees. Things I can't hear living in a residential neighborhood. If you are one of those that just has to have loud music to survive, buy a good set of ear buds or headphones. Even if I like your taste in music I'd rather not listen to it all day long.

I just returned from a State Park in North Dakota. Pet peeve was there were no bathrooms where the campsites were. I had to hike or drive a half mile for an out house and I did find a proper toilet about a mile away. Since my wife's stroke I have to be quite aware of where to take her. I was kinda funny to see all the guys peeing on bushes in the evening.

I think it was made this way because there are cabins across the road and I think the campsites were for family staying with people in the cabins. Didn't know anyone there so I sure didn't ask to use there bathrooms. We will not be returning to that one.

Oh gosh, I *always* bring my own TP when camping. Even if the campground actually has some, it's usually made of raw wood pulp. Make one of these - you'll love it!

***What is it with all the lights??? Campers (mostly RV'ers) that have to outline the entire perimeter of their campsite, their awning, their roof, their everything and everywhere with string lights, or other BRIGHT, BRIGHT, BRIGHT lighting. One site across the road from us was so lit up,---it was like being across the street from a convenience store. Another time, down the hill and through the woods 4 sites away, an RV'er had the entire side of his very large trailer lit up with alternating colored light--- looked like the screen from a drive in movie. Had it on most of the night

***Parents who allow their kids to LOUDLY run amok. Or drunk and/or bellowing adults who LOUDLY run amok chasing after them. When my siblings and I went camping with Mom and Dad (back in the 50's/60's), we were allowed to run around and have fun, but we had to do it in the perimeters our parents set, and I can remember Mom telling us: "There's other people here trying to enjoy their stay "So use your inside voices, keep it down".

***As others have previously noted----Loud, obtrusive music. Just what I want to hear---some goof with his vehicle door open, with the bass cranked up BOOM-DA-DA-BOOM-DA-DA-BOOM.

Thankfully, now that Bob is retired, and I get my "weekend" in the middle of every week, we don't have to suffer the fools we used to encounter on the weekends. Just this past week, at Governor Dodge State Park, Wi, the whole "walk in" sites area of the Twin Lakes campground was empty, except for our teardrop. Ahhhh, blissful, peaceful, quiet.

The barking dog annoying as it is, is secondary to sharing their music!

People who let their dogs bark constantly for hours, while they are there, and won't control their animal when asked politely really upsets me. I like dogs, but they work for us, not the other way around.

Personally, I think I'd be hard pressed to live without a dog. They make great companions; and, although some are better protectors than others, I think they all are bark-alarms (unless some human dastard has removed their vocal cords). Plus, they are a lot more trust-worthy, truthful, and dependable than some humans. Not everyone can have a human person. In addition, even if you find a human that is somewhat acceptable, humans can be very difficult to tame and train.

Going back to the comments on the toilets.... Vault (pit/outhouse) toilets usually have signs in them, asking you to put the lid down before you leave. So, both the seat and the lid are expected to be down between visitors.

A question that I have is, Why hasn't anyone invented toilet seats and lids with handles on the sides, for public restrooms, so that you don't have to touch the part were someone may have pee'd? It may not seem much better; but, psychologically, I would think that people would feel a lot better about it and it would make it easier to lift and put down.

Most people wash their hands when they get back to their campsite, especially if they have visited an outhouse. However, it is common practice, if you do wash your hands in the restroom, to retain your paper drying towel and use it to wrap around the door handle when you exit. That's why you will often see the trash can right by the door. As you exit, you stick your foot in the door, long enough to dump your paper drying towel in the trash can as you leave, after you've opened the door and gone through. Some restrooms no longer have an exit door. In those, only the toilet stalls have doors; and, there is a tall fence around the entrance to the restroom, which opens into the sink area. (Those kinds of restrooms often have air dryers for ones hands.)

Why do restroom doors open in? If someone were leaving and they had to open the door outwards, instead of in, they might hit somebody with it. After all, we don't put see-through windows in restroom doors. Also, I would think it would be easier to kick a door in, in an emergency, than it is to try to pull it open.

You make a good point about putting the lid down in outhouses. It forces the gasses up and out the chimney hopefully to blow away in the wind or continue to rise. When the lid is left up, rather than go up the stack, the stink accumulates in the pit toilet house. I hate going in after some dumb a$$ leaves the lid up because he or she didn't want to touch it, or was just too lazy or inconsiderate to put it down, even after reading the sign. It would be dangerous to light a match in there.

Another pet peeve. Why is it so many campground restrooms are littered with toilet paper and water slopped everywhere? I have to wonder if people do that at home, just thrown their garbage on the floor and get out of the shower dripping wet slopping up everything.

And let me tell you another thing....

The thing that gets me is going to the bathroom and someone standing there in their briefs and taking a bath in the sink. Water going everywhere or seeing women heading to the bathroom where you know they don't have showers with shampoo and body wash know that is going to be a mess when they get done.

Something to be aware of in bathrooms....:

In Mexico, some communities have poor sewer systems and, in those communities, patrons learn not to put any type of paper down the toilet. So, if someone from an area like that is using the facilities and there is no trash can in the restroom stall, the proper thing that they have been taught to do is place their crumpled toilet paper on the floor, next to the toilet. This may also be true for people who are visiting from some other countries as well, I don't know. Try to ignore that it is there, as it was meant well.

As far a people who leave little bits of toilet paper around or don't towel off before leaving the shower and leave puddles on the bathroom floor, my guess is that they are that way at home, too. Always wear some sort of rubber or plastic sandal in and outside of the shower to protect yourself from not only the "Ewww" factor but also foot fungus, etc.
