I was going to build a motorcycle cargo trailer for my bike. You know, the HF mini trailer which I may or may not narrow down a bit to fit a car-top carrier on top of - BORING!
My next idea was to design a cargo carrier to look more like some of the td trailers that are floating around here. So now I would have a REALLY cool looking motorcycle cargo trailer.
Now, I'm getting to the crazy part; something like this viewtopic.php?f=50&t=52724 sized down to a 6' x 3' x 40"w (with that little bit more pointing out the front) to fit on the mini HF trailer. I've seen where a trailer has been extended to allow the structure to be built on and since I have to extend the tongue anyway (for safe towing) I thought I might as well add another foot / maybe foot and a half that direction and the remainder on the rear. I'm supposed to have 418 lbs. max trailer weight with a 55 lb max tongue limit according to another person here with the same bike. The HF mini weighs in at 130 lbs. so .....
Is this idea totally nuts or should I look at it a bit deeper?

I think it sounds like a great starting point. I would recommend the 12 inch wheel HF mini trailer, though. It weighs 20 lbs more but is stronger and the bigger wheels should handle highway travel better.... Just a suggestion.

Well, I've begun!
I bought the 8" wheel HF 40x48 trailer a couple of days ago. I have another HF trailer with upgraded 12" wheels so I don't see exchanging them as an issue. I think I have three spares for that trailer anyway I've managed to get it together already and have placed a 1/2" piece of ply on top and have a 36" tongue extension on order. I am planning three options for this trailer; 1) add a car-top carrier for a pull-along for behind my Honda ST1100 MC, 2) create a frame system to attach kayaks with a cargo box underneath (not the carrier), and 3) creating a small teardrop for it. The initial plan is that these will be built/put together in such a way that I can take one off and add another without much difficulty. I am currently working on the teardrop shapes and will most likely go with something similar to a modified "Simple" (right now looking at 78"x42"hx40"w - though the width may change). I think I can manage it just big enough for two, but it will be a tight squeeze or I may just build onto the 40" width of the trailer as well.
Again, the plan is to share this trailer with my car so I am not limited by the tow weight for the motorcycle, BUT, when I build the teardrop I will be weight conscious so that I should be able to tow it behind the Honda (maybe). I guess we'll see! Wish me luck! Tom

Tom, read a little on the foamie section. You could use foam it is very light and some really neat things can be done with it. Just a suggestion

And...since mine is a 40" by 7' built on the little HF trailer, I esp want to see your ideas and solutions since they could apply to me too.

I don't know Cheri, it looks like you've got a handle on it! That's a pretty nice little trailer you're working on there. Any progress (pictures lol) to report since June 26?

I'm trying. The convertible top is all done, galley finished and am halfway done with the tail light wiring... Then some insurance so I'll have roadside assistance and I think I'm campable. I'll take some more pictures when I get a chance. This has been fun but I can't wait for the next part...

I thought long and hard about those heavy duty slide extensions for a pull out bed in eggbert.

I picked the entire body up and deposited it in my truck bed with ease after it was built.
I took it home and mounted it on the trailer.

I did completely replace the tongue with 9 feet of 2x2 x 3/16 square tube running from the very rear cross member.
This forms a cat #2 receiver ( 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 ) if you want a bike rack or even a rear rest for the kayaks

exchanged out the 12" tires for 8" to drop the tow height then it became a pussycat.
