Coolers?

Postby johnnail » Wed Aug 27, 2014 3:39 pm

Hi all. I'm new to Teardrops. I just bought a Retro Jr. It's about perfect for me, but the area in my galley won't allow the big door to close on a very big cooler. What do you use?

Lots to pick from in coolers. Typically the more you pay, the better product you get from the low end $20 Wally World special, to the $600 yeti.

I went with the $50 Coleman steel belted retro cooler that I got on sale. The lid clasp broke after the first outing and I had to rebuild it. That clasp is built like a tank now! The Coleman is not well insulated and I have to re-ice every three days if I use crushed ice. I get 5 days out of it if I use ice blocks.

Also, I use 2 coolers. The steel belted Coleman in the teardrop galley for food stuff. It only opens at meals. The other is a $40 cheap plastic Coleman (that I did not get on sale) on wheels in the back of the car that we use for drinks.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the colman metal, but it got poor reviews for the hinges

Ha, ha, now I know why mine was on sale! I would recommend a better one. I have not been thrilled with mine.

I have found the Coleman Xtreme 5 day coolers to work very well for the price point. I have one that is used in my raft for whitewater overnights. So far no issues keeping food and beverage cold over 3 day / 2 night trips. In the raft the cooler sits in the sun most of the day and occasionally gets wet, so that is fairly good performance. Amoung my group of friends we essentially consider these to be more or less equivelent to Yeti coolers for about 1/5th the price.

The whole line up is here: http://www.coleman.com/Products/8581/xtremereg-coolers. I have the 52 quart.

It took me a long long time to get over the price tag of an ARB fridge/freezer but once doing so have to say it's our favorite mod/purchase yet. Not having to worry about buying ice, ice melting, soggy egg cartons, etc has revolutionized our camping experience. OK, I might be exaggerating just a bit, but we really really love having a fridge.

I just went 9 days with block ice in a coleman steel sider, it was in the mid to high 80s. Threw a wet towel over it during the days, and had to throw a good size chunk out when I got home.

Well, I started this more about the size of the cooler than it's quality. Cabela's has some "guide" models that look good

Size? What has size got to do with it? No seriously, measure the space and get the cooler that fits? Every manufacturer makes a variety of sizes.

I did the opposite. I bought the cooler, then made the space to fit.

Pelican is a good substitute for the Yeti. They are very well made and keep ice just as long. I have guy son my crew that have both. Pelican seems to be the one to get. Oh yeah, they are about half what a yeti cost. SAM's Club has them both.
