Polymax Woes

Postby Bodyman » Mon May 08, 2006 6:49 pm

I have been skinning and trimming my teardrop the past week as time permits.
I am using Polymax from FarmTec and started by trying the 3M transfer tape on the roof. It sticks great but the Polymax does not necessarily lie flat. At times it lays good other times depending on temp it tends to bulge in between the tape strips. I don’t know what it will do in the sun.
I didn’t like the top so decided to use vinyl top adhesive on the sides. It worked great. Just like I laminated it. :applause: I used sprayable with an old paint gun and the sides went on really fast. Individual aerosol cans would work but it would take a quite a few and be more time consuming.
That was last weekend and I have been busy since but have had time to fit the hatch and put on some of the trim. But!!!!!!!! Today I walked by it and noticed what has been a bodyman’s nightmare ever since the lead was removed from paint :? transparency :x I can see every place I mudded in knot holes. I’m not sure how much this will show in the sunlight and most of the spots are near something that take your eye away from them. If not maybe some graphics. I’m not worried . this camper was to learn on and will eventually go to my daughter in Oklahoma. She is already talking about airbrushing a scene on it.
I used clear sealer but would recommend if anyone is glueing Polymax on tight to use a colored sealer or paint to obtain a uniform base underneath otherwise the dark spots will show through.
All in all I really like this stuff but have found things I will do different next time

Sounds like you had some of the problems that I have been having. I am using Henry's 663 on my trailer. All say to use a 1/16 notched trowel to apply the Henry's. Well I tried that and had a GIANT (a foot or more in diameter) pimple show up on one side and some wrinkles on the top that I could not get out. After having to cut the sides off in 2' wide strips so that they could be pulled off (Henrys sticks pretty darn good) and having my son-in-law, daughter and the wife and myself to pull the top piece off so that it may be saved I am using a different approch. I used a 1/8" trowel to put more Henrys on the side, thick as can be, used a roll it on and smooth it out as it is applied and to date the side has no bubble and is tight as a tick.
Too date have I have not put the top on. Weather will not co-operate. My findings were that anywhere there is an air pocket the PolyMax will really bubble up when the sun hits it. For something that nothing will stick to, the Henrys does a darn good job. Just try scraping it off.

Ron I just read your reply Sorry abouit the problems but I think we are getting this stuff figured out. I really like working with it if it sticks tight.
I ran my tear outside in the sun for the first time yesterday and as I feared my roof and hatch heated up and were really wavey. My sides were great but those were glued solid (almost laminated) with vinyl top adhesive.
I decided the roof is livable (maybe) but I pulled the skin off the hatch, cleaned things up and just finished redoing it as I did the sides. Now to put the trim back on. Wow was that sealed on tight I don't think this thing would leak underwater.
