Frame is done, FINALLY!

Postby Woodbutcher » Tue May 16, 2006 7:27 pm

I have had the steel for this trailer 4 weeks. Just waiting for my brothers company to cut and weld it. Well Saturday we cut all the parts and today it is finished. I am going to use Rustolium truck bed Epoxy coating. I biult the floor and wall frames while waiting so I hope for no snags in fitting them together. Here are a few pics. I know ya like da pics!

Image

I am using the Flexride torsion axle and here is a pic of how I am mounting it so I can adjust where it goes to get the right tongue weight.

Image

Here is how the corner gussets look. I am using the Atwood corner jacks.

Image

Here is a pic of my tongue A frame. I used 2x2x.250 for the tongue.

Wow, they did a really nice job blending the A-frame tongue. :applause:

You gotta let us know how the paint works out.

Nice work, Woodbutcher. Really looks great. Looks as if you are well prepared for figuring out where to put the axle.

Hey Woodbutcher! You're in the same pickle as I am. Where ya' gonna' put that there nose wheel and jack? Cantilevered off of one side? I have modified a HF trailer with a center tongue support and now I got no place to hang the darn thing! Inquiring minds want to know.

It has to go on one side http://tnttt.com/album_ ... ic_id=1991
Greg, if you put in on the side and it flex's you can tie it to the center to stiffen it up. Image

My A frame has a metal plate welded to the top and bottom with a hole cut in the middle. The jack is welded in. I know it is a pain to cut a hole through all that tubing but it might be worth it in the long run. ;)

I'm thinkin' that would be a very bad idea, you would be removing a whole lot of material at a major stress point.

Good point Nitetimes,

I'm betting if you ran a cylinder all the way through that hole and welded it in, it wouldn't compromise the strength of the tongue. Still, that's a major hole to drill, say 2"?

 GB
I'm betting it would take a cutting torch unless they have a full fledged machine shop. The middle tube would be compromised maybe, but I think a piece flat metal welded on should take care of it. The jack itself is welded on mine. It is the kind that screws up and down as opposed to flipping out of the way.

I mixed the Rustolium Epoxy truck bed coating up today and painted the frame. It is thick Tar like stuff with a hardner thats like honey. Just mix and it is the consistancy of standard paint with sand in it. You apply 1 coat and then as soon as it tacks up you apply a second. There is a pot life of only 3-4 hours once you mix it. It is messy but looks like it is very tough. It is a rubberized coating and I thought it would be better with stone chips then a regular Rustolium. Since the frame will not show when done I did not worry about the texture.
As for the tongue dollie I will tackle that next week when the paint has curred. I'm off to go Jeepin this weekend so the trailer will wait.

Looking great!

That truck bed coating? Does it adhear to wood? Might make a good undercoat for the floor? Or is it too pricey for that?

You must have a good hoist to mount that tear on your trailer?

On attaching a nose wheel...I put a swing away tucked right up near the front of the A member where it attaches to the center tongue...gives more room than a vertical attached jack...it's not that much off center, certainly not enough to cause a problem, hasn't on my first one, but I used angle so did tie the angle on the A member leg to the tongue to minimize flex...since you have sq. tube, I wouldn't worry about any flex...just try to keep it near the front to keep it as close to center as possible...I also have a short 500# jack on both tears...but from the photo...you've got tons of room to put a swing away on...just depends on how short you cut the tongue, if you are going to...Doug

Doug, I used angle also, but I used tube to tie them together. No flex now.
