Not to be a nay-sayer, but think of the sail that puts up. I know, bc I noticed just 6 extra inches in height.

Yup. Everything is a trade off.

Years ago a friend had a van with a pop up roof. It was all sheet metal. It slid out as you pushed up and it formed a big bump, a teardrop-like shape. Curved sides folded up on hinges to mate perfectly with the curved roof. Took about 10-15 seconds to set up. It gave you standing head room for a big guy. It never leaked, but you drove with it in the down position if you wanted the better gas mileage. Must have been loud when it rained. Impossible to insulate.

In some parts of the country, the flag is used as the camouflage (but their yankee accents give 'em away)!

Never been there, just have passed north of it a few times. Here's an excerpt from their website:

Park Entrances

Park entrances are open 24 hours daily, all year. Entrance fee stations have variable seasons and hours.

Visitor Centers

Panther Junction
Open daily, 9:00am-5:00pm. Reduced hours on Christmas day.
Chisos Basin
Open daily, 8:30am-4:00pm. Closed for lunch. Reduced hours on Christmas day.


Big Bend's busy season is generally November through April and the park is often full to capacity for six weeks each year: Thanksgiving week, Christmas holiday season, and spring break (mid March). During these periods, demand for camping and overnight lodging is far greater than the number of campsites and rooms available within the park. Advance reservations for camping & lodging are highly recommended. In order to maximize your visit, it is best to plan ahead and have alternatives. Weather Averages

The table below is based on average temperatures at the Panther Junction park headquarters. Temperatures in the higher mountain areas vary about 5–10 degrees below those shown, while temperatures along the Rio Grande can be 5–10 degrees higher. Sunshine is abundant most of the year. Infrequent and brief periods of cloudy weather may occur during the winter months. While snow is rare and generally light, occasional cold fronts can bring temperatures well below freezing.

I'm stuck in DFW 99% of the time, for the last 45 years at work...haven't been able to travel much even in Texas since the '70s.

Looks like now (late October) is the best time to go there. Maybe next year then for me. I would actually enjoy a little rain there.
