Getting ready to rebuild my hatch

Ever since I picked up my TD I've been wanting to rebuild the hatch. The previous owner didnt use the proper hinge .
So after looking over tons of info on the hatch Im to the point on ordering parts. Where to get the hurricane hinge or whos still in business these days to get it.

Ask him what to seal it with and any other hinge hatch questions you've got. The guy may have built more teardrops than I'll ever see.

Grant will work with you.Take a look at his webpage and drop him a note or give him a call. Most people overhang the hinge 3/8" over both sides.

Modstock ... send me an e-mail at [email protected] ... 51" is not a problem (but will cost a little more, though not the 5' price), but like Tony said, I typically send 3/4" more than the overall width of the trailer so you will have 3/8" overhang on each side (body side piece only ... hatch side should be flush with the sides of the hatch). If that is confusing, I can send you a photo series that shows how I suggest trimming the hinge ... just let me know ... ...!

No. The original builder of my teardrop didnt build the hatch right using gate hinges and a piece of rubber going accross. It was his 3rd attempt on the hatch and then just ended up selling it.
I knew this needed to be done when I got it and just have put it off till now . Lately our camping trips have been seeing more rain. Good thing its always stored inside.
So right now Im adding up my costs before I start the new hatch .

51 inches will give me 1.5in extra .

Looks like I need to cut out the 3/8ths from the wall. Could be why the hatch sits higher than the rest of the TD .

Today I picked up a sheet of 1/8 " plywood plus two 8 footers of 1.5 X and some screws . So far, im $25 into it .

Hey, Wayne!

Can you post up a couple of pictures of the current arrangement and how the hatch overlaps the sidewalls? Typically, with my 0-offset Galley Lid Hinge, a 1/4" notch is all you need, and 1/8" is the minimum (which is what I normally cut).

It was step 5 on the generic benroy plans I was referring to . I need to cut 3/8ths from the side-walls to get the hatch to sit right .
I'll post a pic here shortly but please dont laugh ( its not my work) .

The hatch frame is built and the center ribs are glued in (temporarly) . Then friday I can start screwing it all together .

Cant wait to put this on . The frame is built but I have a few Lil issues to clear up before I mount it.
Picked up a 4x8 sheet of 1/8 plywood to cover the outside but..... im about a 1 - 1/2" short . Crap I guess I'll have to use that for the inside . Also have a problem with the galley wall . The hatch frame touches it , so I may have to knock that out OR do some grinding to the area .
Going to pick up a 5x5 sheet tomorrow to cover the frame then I can deal with the outher things to sort out .
