will it be big enough

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

will it be big enough

Postby felixx » Tue Dec 02, 2014 5:43 am

Hi, I am a bit of a lurker.
Been pining over these for years

Anyway, I have never seen one in real life

Would a 7'6 x 4'6" trailer be OK to make a teardrop for myself and my (almost) 5 year old boy to camp in?
I am 6' tall and 160lb dripping wet

I was thinking something like the benroy (with a simple galley)

Cheers

Felixx,

Welcome to the board!

Most anything can be made to work, the more important question is will you be comfortable?

Most children...mine anyway, were not easy to sleep with as they toss and turn a lot.
A good experiment is for you to lay on your back, hands folded on your chest with elbows out and relaxed.
Measure from elbow to elbow and see how much room is left for your son.

Another eye opener is to trace the shape and size on the floor. Now tape some cardboard boxes together for walls, of the correct height, and lay a blanket or sheet for the roof. Crawl in and see what you have.

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

A cardboard "mock up" is always the BEST way to determine how thangs will "fit". Go to yer local appliance store and ask fer a couple a refrigerator boxes, take em home and measure and cut the boxes with a utility knife and tape the pieces together.

It's a whole lot cheaper than plywood...and frankly,a lot more FUN !

Remember the thickness of the mattress!
And, I always recommend to those that have a width choice, too go 5' wide.
Unless you plan to sleep alone all of the time.
And Teardrops are small enough? 8x10 is really not that big????

Ours is 4x8, "Grueman" type shape. So the inside is about 10 inches less than 8 feet long. Some kids rock and roll a lot, so it might be tough. Wife and I love ours, but we've been sleeping together for over 40 years. I'm only 5-10 so I just put galley wall at comfortable length. Course wife is only 5' she has room to run. If you can, try a night in a twin, they are about 39. That would also give you an idea. The 48 is 9 more inches, of course, but you don't have the walls to hem you in. Coyote

This brings back some memories! My kids "flailed" their arms a lot when they slept= you could get back handed in the face!

Felixx,

I have a 5 year old also, I chose to forgo the galley and build a raiseed bed perpendicular to the mattress my wife and I will sleep on. Only thing is I went 5' wide so I could fit a queen bed for me and enough room for my little guy till he gets 5' tall. I figured by then he'll be sleeping in a tent next to the trailer.

I tried what seemed like 250 or so designs! You can still have the galley if the bunk overhangs your feet.

Have fun with the build!

4'6" wide isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mattresses for trailers are an expensive item and 54" wide is a standard size. (so is 60" but...)

54" used to be considered a full size bed.
