Sway-Master

Postby Rafael » Tue Dec 09, 2014 7:37 pm

New at this world sorry. I couple of weeks ago I accidentally bought a 1963 Trail Feather in need of a good home and lots of TLS. On the front of it there is a bar with two pulley and a cable with hooks at the end. On the bar it says:
" Sway -Master
(TM applied for)
Trailer stabilizers
Valley tow-rite"
Any one has any idea what is it for? do you connect the cables to the car instead of the chains? Sorry about the stupid questions
Thanks

The "Sway Master" was/is most likely a brand of sway control
used to control trailer sway when towing. There are a lot of
different designs to do that, this one probably had a cable that
ran through the pulley wheels and was attached to some kind
of damping device and the hitch on the tow vehicle. I'm surprised
it's on such a small trailer as yours, but then any trailer can sway
if it is not designed right or correctly loaded, both of which are
not widely known. Check out the 'Design Resources' in the header
of this website for info on that.

It might be able to be made to work, but a modern version would be a better bet.
A lot of the small standies were poorly balanced, or very easy to get out of balance, and as a result, can be uncomfortable to tow without a sway control device.
Better to correct the balance issues, then add sway control as a backup, instad of trying to fix a balance issue with sway control, then having no backup in an emergency.
