Gate latches seem to work well for now holding the drop bunks to the wall. Will they hold in bumpy transit? I will lock with a carabiner but not sure how much force they are being subject to.

Gonefishin''s setup has been my inspiration: Simple, light, happy and care free. The trailer must retain its original cargo capacity for 5 kayaks, 5 mountain bikes, and 2 not very small German Shepherds.

Better patent that design. Pretty ingenious.

Have had plenty of time to prowl the forum to conglomerate ideas.

I researched the sizes of ship and submarine quarters/berths and decided that we could just barely pull off the triple-bunk. Some berths are actually smaller than these vertically. We (my wife and I) are not very big folks and our kids aren't either. I could sleep on one of these bunks with little reservation.

The triple bunk was the main reason we went to a 7' interior. Without the triple, the whole plan fell apart (ability to carry 5 kayaks, 5 mountain bikes, and all the accoutrements.)

Also, a question on getting the propane hose through the floor: I need to drop two hoses, the Dickinson Marine and the cook stove. I want to pull the hoses during travel so that they don't weather and prematurely wear. What type of portal can I drop into the floor that seals around the hose yet is large enough to pass the regulator?

I suspect that my heater will be in one side and the cookset on the other which is annoying as I have to sink two ports and chase two hoses under the trailer every time.

Where are you going to mount the hot water heater? Inside? Outside?
If outside, how do you keep the water in the system from freezing at night or while away from the CT?
If I could see me using one, the cost, sure would be lower for me versus the Attwood unit.t

You've done a great job with your setup so far. Love the bunks!

For my stove I run a propane hose in through a marine fuel port in the floor. When I am traveling I remove the hose both from inside the trailer, as well as off of the tank outside. Then roll it up and store it inside. The port opening is about 1 1/2 inch in dia.

It isn't big enough to pass the regulator up into the CT but a 4 or 6 inch marine deck plate would probably be big enough. That is what I used to put my stove pipe through my wall.



Both screw closed, so there is no dust etc coming in. But if you use a 4 or 6 inch opening, you would have to figure out something to put around your hose to close around it to keep mice and cold out.

It is best not to have very much rubber gas hose inside as they do have a possibility of leaking. Marine hoses are better. We discussed it some on Gonefishin's heater install pages. Just so you are aware. viewtopic.php?f=42&t=56858&start=30

Eventually I will put in a more permanent metal gas pipe and connections under my trailer.

My goal is to keep it simple, no fuss. No complicated hard-plumbed systems. (No freezing )

I bought the Eccotemp L5 instant hot water heater. I will probably mount either permanently by the door or in an in-transport location and then hang it by the door and shower just outside that door. I only need a 5 gallon bucket or any type of water source. I'm sure you've seen these in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmqAM6azSm8
The hot water heater won't freeze as there is no water in it unless the pump is running.

I'm coming from a backpacking background and also an overland style of camping so the basic amenities in a fully enclosed cargo trailer feels luxurious.

Nice build, really like those ATC trailers, Gonefishin a hero of mine as well. Kayaks, kids, mountain bikes, very familiar. 7x16 was the ideal for us as well.

We used the removable bunks to hold kayaks as well as the super handy vertical e-track (ugly but really functional and modular):


I think Gadgetman built a neat removable PVC pipe kayak rack as well, somewhere around here...

This cargo conversion idea has been huge hit with our family, and really handy even for day trips, it's really not overkill, everything is pretty much loaded already, and there when you need it after a day of paddling or biking. We just unload whatever sport or hobby we aren't doing that trip, and presto!

I'll check out your build when I get the chance, David. It looks like you have been down the road I am headed. Haven't figured out the bike transport scenario as one of my goaIs is to avoid "the dance" of set-up and take-down having done the pop-up camper and roof-top tent overland trailer option in the past. In other words, I want to back into our spot and be out on the water or the trail with no fuss with the essential including beds and bedding and kitchen supplies and food pretty much ready to go. It makes it easier to get out on a weekend amongst a busy life.

I will be checking out the e-track: I'm envisioning a fork-mount bike rack (5) mounted across a 2x4. Front wheel has to come off but not too much effort beyond that. It all depends where the major build components end up in terms of interior placement.

Hope to get some time on the trailer this weekend.
