I use a couple different styles depending on weather and NEED for fire.
We seal up cotton balls and petroleum jelly inside of straw tubes, cut the end on one and drag out just a bit and strike a mag firestriker and it lights very fast and about a 4 inch length will burn for about 5 minutes and easily light normal wood. oh and we also use the sealed up straws to save aspirin, seasonings, and all kinds of small stuff dry.
I have 90% rubbing alcohol or HEAT packed in camping gear and cut the lower half of a coke can and then set it under the kindling, fill with heat/alcohol and let it burn, will burn plenty long to have a great fire.
I do have a small paint can style can that we got new without anything in it. I packed it with lint, cotton balls with jelly, and stuffed in two pine cones, pour wax over it all and added a few strings for lighting and then seal the can. I have had this can for about two yrs and have not yet had the need for it yet.
Last ditch effort, will get any fire going and burns even longer than the last method, we use either a half gallon sized metal can, roll of toilet paper, and a mixture of heat and diesel fuel. TP in can first, soak with mixture, then strike match and stack wet logs or kindling on top of and you will have a fire.
