100 electrical box placement?

Was roaming the Lowe's aisles last night for design inspiration. Was down the electrical aisle and looking through the countless versions of the electrical boxes. i.e the blue plastic boxes used to house wall plugs. Generally they seem to be almost three inches deep. From the designs I see, most walls are no more than 2". Does this mean that wall outlets and switches go into cabinetry. Is this true for the 9 volt plugs too? When connecting lights (reading, cabin, entry, etc), is forgoing the box a suitable design?

Look a little harder they make 1/2 depth boxes in the blue Carlon boxes. I think they are 1" to 1 1/4" deep.

I had to look hard at Lowe's the other day to find any. In fact, at one store I could not find any.

One can also build up a nice design frame to extend box front some what so a semi deep box can be used in thin wall, but it will extend face of box into living area a bit.... IF well done (placed) it should not be objectionable item but rather a "feature"...

the only problem with the really thin boxes is that they do not have the "required" wire space for wires and the device. They make ones that have a side compartment that work better for this type of work, give you have the depth (1 1/2" if I remember correctly). The low voltage stuff, anything under 49volts, do not require boxes.

I didn't use any electrical boxes. I used a piece of water pipe as my conduit and left a hollow portion of the wall open. Once the interior skin was on I drilled a hole and pulled the wires through.

I will assume that the previous pics are for low voltage (12 volt) outlets, correct?
