What insulation are you using? Beware as some foam insulation reacts with the insulation on the wiring. Basically it will break down the insulation on the wires and will short out. As far as I know, it is a requirement in NZ to have your 230v wiring in conduit if it goes through foam.

Dow extruded polystyrene foam.
Pretty much the same gear the foamaholics here use.
To my knowledge it dosn't react with anything.
It's aparantly 3 x lighter ,8 x stronger than normal poly and has than less than 1% moisture absorbancy .
It self heals from impact too.

So now I'm thinking about the foam in my walls. I planned to route a groove to lay the wiring in... but now I'm worried about a reaction with the insulation? How do I find out if that will be an issue or not?

I would suggest that you check with the manufacturer, or go the cautious way and conduit it anyway. Or try Google.

That's exactly what I was going to do as well.
Might try to get hold of the guy and see.
I'm wondering if I layed down some polyurethane adhesive and bedded the wires into that in the rebate then piped more over the top to encapsulate it might be the go then?
My 240v will pay straight through the wall into the shore power so shouldn't contact the foam anyway it's only the 12v that I'm now concerned about

Looks good!
Um yeah my electrician said that too, it can catch fire. Is it the heat from the current?

Thanks very much for that mate it could have been at the leat a very costly mistake at the worst deadly.
I see there are cables that are poly safe witch is what it go for.
As I said it's only 12v I'm concerned about but I still don't want internal wall issues as I'm not building it to come apart

It was only 12v for me too, but there is no way once the roof was glued on that I wanted to have to get in there again.

I'm a 12V guy, but I'm 90% sure there is no restrictions in U.S. building codes involving romex running next to foam insulation.

Here's an interesting read: http://gfretwell.com/electrical/nema_ro ... _study.pdf

Of note, it makes no differences, as far as temperature, whether it's in conduit or not, since it'll still produce the same temperature.
