My trailer in action this morning :)

Postby Mike S » Tue Jan 20, 2015 4:06 pm

I thought you guys might be interested in seeing my trailer in action. It's another week of work-camping. We woke up this morning to a foggy sunrise and an empty campground. One of the reasons I love being outside in the winter is the solitude. In the summer time this campground is mostly full on most nights, plus there are adjacent soccer fields that draw noisy families every afternoon. This week it's just us.

Note that after 1000's of miles of driving on snowy, icy, and foggy roads, the truck and trailer do need a bath. I'm hoping to stop by the RV carwash after work today. I'd like to avoid the salt eating my trailer alive.

Don't worry, my full build thread is in the works!

Okay, here they are resized. This should be easier on the eyes. I can't figure out how to delete the originals or modify the original post, sorry.

Mike...

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to remember to set up a gallery before my next post....

It was about 23F degrees this morning. Our coldest night so far in the trailer got down to 10 F. No problemo.

If we ever get enough snow here in the east Id like to take my td out for some xc skiing. Winter is a great time to camp in a small trailer.

Mike S, Howdy;

Yuck, ice fog ... that be some kinda nasty stuff. Been having
bouts of that here in N.M. lately. Great if you like Black Ice .

Mike, how are you heating the trailer? I saw your post about dual 1" insulation foam, but didn't see anything about the heater. You must have done it right if you're comfy at 10 degrees.

I've been negligent on posting my build thread, or maybe I should say, I've been negligent on finishing this never-ending project.

When I'm just about finished with the project, I'll post the build thread.

Anyway I've got two layers of 1-inch, R-6 rigid foam insulation on the walls and ceiling, and one layer on the floor.

I use a 12,000 BTU Atwood Hydroflame RV furnace. I also have a 1500 watt portable room heater that I use occasionally if we plug in somewhere. The Hydroflame gets it HOT. Last night it got down to about 20 F outside. I had the thermostat set to 65 F and the furnace cycled on and off all night. I would guess that it was on for about 5 minutes and off for about 30 minutes. The electric heater does okay too; it doesn't get downright hot, but it does an okay job of maintaining room temperature.

edit: here's my RV furnace: http://www.atwoodmobile.com/furnaces/everest-star-7900-ii-series.asp

What we've found over the last few months is that keeping the trailer warm is no problem. The bigger challenge has been moisture control. The build is not completely finished, so there are still a few exposed areas of metal framing and aluminum skin. Any metal that's exposed to the inside gets wet; I mean soaked with water. Eventually most of the metal areas will be insulated and sealed. As I'll show in my build thread I've been very conscious of creating a moister barrier. I just hope I did a good enough job.

More to come.
