Extending a TD?

I'd love to add about 6 inches to my galley. I think I have a way, but I thought I would throw it out for discussion.

My galley hatch was cut from the walls, here is a side view.

What if I straighten out the cut, than add on like this?

Straigtening the current sides would make matching up the cut a lot easier ( I could make a simple template).
Would it look odd?
I wouldn't add on to the body at the bottom, but have it slope up like on a weekender.

Did I forget anything?

First, I'd be inclined to NOT cut the body, and just switch out the hatch. Remove the old one, and use it as a template to match the current body shape.

Then you'd always have the fall back of putting the old hatch back on if you need to.

Otherwise, it seems doable. Watch out for the weight though. Wouldn't want to be restricted to parking under big trees and using a block and tackle to raise the hatch....

The current hatch doesn't line up with the walls anyhow, this plan came out of me thinking about ways to improve that. The additional weight would be about 6 inches of 3/4 plywood that is about 2 feet long on each side. I have some pnuematic hatch supports that don't quite lift the current hatch, but they do make it pretty light to lift. I'm hoping a couple of extra pounds doesn't make it much worse .

That's pretty darn impressive! I'm still kicking myself for not stopping sooner. I was hearing the wompawompawompa for a couple of miles thinking.. .What is that?

Here is a picture that would give you a ideal how it would look.

With the extended shelf you wouldn't hit your legs on the floor.
It also allows a slide out shelf like I did.

That's pretty darn impressive! I'm still kicking myself for not stopping sooner. I was hearing the wompawompawompa for a couple of miles thinking.. .What is that?

In our case it is what happens when you drag a 2000 pound teardrop on a gravel road with a diesel truck that can tow 16,000 pounds.

We got a flat and never felt or heard it. The truck didn't give any indication of pulling hard, swaying, or anything. Never knew until we hit the pavement and Kat heard something funny.....

Ran the flat long enough that it shredded and came off the rim.

Put the spare on, and had an uneventful drive home after that.

I had to do some repair to the fender. the flailing of the tire "reshaped" the back edge.
