Favorite Breed of Dog to Camp with

A breed with a good demeanor that is generally quiet would be high on my list.

A fun, loving dog that does well with kids, other dogs, and that doesn't bother the neighbors would be ideal to take camping.

We camp with our Goldendoodle, Her first camping trip was when she was around 10 weeks old, we just picked her up just a week earlier. She did great, slept in a small crate in the tent. She then migrated to sleeping at the foot of the air mattress on a thin bed (She is now 45-48 lbs and the crate was to big and took up too much space) to eventually in the sleeping bag with my daughter.

We have taken her on 3 week camping trips with no issues. She rides in the truck, lets us know when she needs to get out, sleeps at our feet in the teardrop, and is easy to train and very smart. She just needs lots of attention and touching or closeness. She wants to be touched all the time. She is very easy going and she has even stayed in motels with no issues. On our 3 week trip camping through Red woods, Yosemite, etc we only boarded her for 2 day when we went into the city (San Francisco).



I highly recommend goldendoodles and she doesn't shed, so no hair gets on anything to worry about

I have to go with the collie. My foamie teardrop is just the right size for my boy and myself. He also helps keep me warm.

These are my two camping buddies. I think any Dog breed will be fine at a campground, as long as they have some basic training.

We have a pair of Papillion. Henry and Ruby, brother and sister (5kg and 6kg fluff balls). It is not often that we get to take them with us as a lot of camps in New Zealand don't allow dogs.
We were amazed that we were able to take them to this camp at Kaihu, as a lot of the surrounding area is state parks and reserves with Kiwi, so dogs are banned.
They don't sleep with us, they have usually slept in the car, but our next trip away with them, we will be towing with our '67 Humber Super Snipe. So we have just bought a couple of folding fabric crates for them to travel in, and sleep in them in the side awning.

Have to agree with others, whatever dog you have....we are big on rescue dogs. Any chance to save a dog's life is a good one because I promise you, it will save yours and give you years of joy.

We camp with our spoiled Catahoula Mix pup named Kya.


Yes, she even has her own camp chair so she does not have to lie on the ground. Kids are gone and out of the house so we need to spoil something. LOL

We took our Silky Terrier on two trips with the 5th wheel and he was a good pup- never barked or cried when we left the camper to go sightseeing. We took a long bus tour of Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse, so we made arrangements to have a dog walker in the campground give him three walks. The next day, we were walking our Sparky dog and everyone says- "hi Sparky"-huh?? Well, seems that the 2nd time they tried to walk him, he jumped out of the camper like greased lightning. All the campers spent the next 3 hours trying to catch him-- finally a girl collared him with a tasty treat. He thought that was a grand adventure!
He is sure interested in my Weekender-XL build- I can read the pup's mind-- "when are we leaving daddy?"

Max is our 17 year old beagle. Been with us on every trip in the US. Just took our cat Stinky along on the last trip and she was great. Max can't hear anymore and his eyesight isn't so great, but boy does that beagle nose still work!

Our female American Bulldog has acquitted herself quite welll as a camp dog for the last two years. She's not too keen on other dogs who've got a chip on their shoulder but she's an otherwise great dog to be out in the woods with.

Right now i am leaning towards a brittany Spaniel. Does anybody have any experience with this bread in the close confines of a TD?
