Filling a tank from jug

Postby wincrasher » Mon Jan 26, 2015 10:18 pm

This may sound kinda dumb, but here goes.

How do you refill your on-board water tank from a jug?

Brute force (hoisting the jug up and dumping it via hose into the gravity fill), or do you use some kind of transfer pump (manual or 12v)?

If you use a pump, suggestions would be great.

I think in my case, I would use a simple funnel concept and do it manually.

I tried that and water went everywhere. The tube at the end of the funnel wasn't long enough; so, it didn't stick into the tank far enough, making the funnel unstable. So, I guess it depends upon the size of the funnel...or, maybe you could add on a bit of tight fitting hose tubing to the existing tube end so that it goes in farther. That did work for me. Just in case, be prepared to get a little wet. Oh, and if the tubing isn't tight enough, your tubing could end up in the tank forever.

There's some answers on the Little Guy forum where you asked this question also.

I have a short length of hose. One end fits into the water filler. The other end has a funnel inserted inside the hose. If we fill using gallon jugs it's a one person job. If we use 5 gallon jugs/cans then it becomes a 2 person job.

Opps, you got me Cindy. Yes you are right and I do that also when I fill my boats up. I thought on noting it here, but said, what the heck and did not. The one problem I have is that most funnels I have have a tapered tube end. I finally found one with a failry consistent diameter and I will secure a tube to it and use a hose clamp on it (more for use when pouring gas from a container into a vehicle.)

I found a flexible spout at the auto parts store that people use on oil bottles that also fit the threads on a 20 oz pop bottle. I cut the bottom out of a bottle and used it as a funnel. If you use a 5gal. jug, though, as someone already said, its a 2 person job.

Thanks for the input. Think this might be the best solution where you don't have to lift the jug:

I have one of the 5 gallon flexible water carriers the cap/valve has about a five foot section of Tygon hose attached. I set the full five gallon container on to of the tear snake the hose into filler neck and gravity does its work.

I find that a funnel made from a 2-liter soda bottle is useful Has a wider opening than most funnels. Just cut the bottom off the bottle.
