Florida Registration

Postby Lynn Coleman » Mon Mar 26, 2007 3:56 pm

Hi all,

Today I went to register the INKWELL and I thought it might be helpful for those living in Florida to hear what I learned today.

First thing to realize is that the Inkwell is a TTT, not a TD. Some of this information might not apply but parts of it will.

First, we purchased the trailer (heavy guage aluminum frame) from a company that makes utility trailers. The cost did NOT include the sales tax. According to the tax collectors office, these types of companies aren't required to. Soooo, be prepared to pay sales tax unless you have your receipt that shows tax was collected.

Second, we discovered it HAD to be weighted. The registrator was very helpful in providing the location of a scale in our area. So after we covered the window that hadn't been put in, covered the outdoor storage area that didn't have it's door on yet and held our door shut with a wire (long story, suffice it to say the lock mechanism is at the locksmith's today) we managed to get it weighed in. It weighs 1300lbs.

Oh yeah, you pay by the weight of the trailer to the tax collector's office.

We didn't need a title but only because we don't have plumbing and wiring in it. If you put in 110V wiring system you have to get a title and your trailer now becomes a travel trailer. At the moment the Inkwell is classified as a utility trailer because it doesn't have power and plumbing. If you install pipes, water tanks, etc. You will have to get a title in the state of Florida.

If however, you wire exclusively with 12v system you are still considered to have a utility trailer, providing you don't have plumbing.

Now, if/when we put in our electrical system, we will have to fill out a change of vehicle/trailer form, pay for a title and go on from there. You will also have to have the electrical and plumbing inspected before your trailer is approved.

I had been told to simply go in and say we had a home built trailer...the tax collector's office asks way too many questions to get by with that answer.

Registration for a 1300lbs. trailer is basically 32 bucks in Florida. I paid more but that is because of the sales tax that I had to pay.

Hope this helps those who haven't registered their trailers yet in the state of Florida.

Thanks for the FL Registration information. I can take out my 120 V wiring as it is not going to be utilized and maybe i can be classified as a utility trailer!

I am putting in a 12v system/ Marine battery and 850 watt inverter, There will be a drop cord plug in the trailer and power strip and an outside door for the end of the cord. As long as it's a drop cord and not permanent wiring, I see no issues with the tax collector's office. I worked at the front desk one winter= I know how to get around regulations. I'll probably go back in soon and take my weight ticket (760 lbs) and revise my registration to reflect the extra 500lbs of weight from having an enclosed trailer. Since I will go to the office I worked in, they will be very nice to me.
