Spare on hatch

Postby Modstock » Sun Feb 08, 2015 10:38 pm

Im going to be putting a storage box w/ battery up front but would like to shift some other weight to the rear.
I thought about putting the spare on the hatch . If it was near the top of the hatch it shouldnt affect liftiing it too much, plus it could make for a fast swap. IDK what do yall think ? anybody done this ?

Don't know your particular situation, but I would not think the hatch would have the structural integrity to support and hold the spare properly. Here's how I solved my spare tire mounting:

It' even light enough to lift that my wife can lift it up and out of the way to access the storage box, it worked out very well for me, just an idea for you.

Got to agree with Redneck, don't think hatch is the place... Might consider under trailer like PU trucks do.... Many have small crank operated winch to raise and lower it into place... Visit to junkyard would secure winch, only other question is there room...

I agree with Dale. Putting it underneath out of the way makes allot of sense. In 40 years of trailer towing I only once had to reach for the spare tire. In the picture below I show mine, a compact spare from the wreckers, mounted just ahead of the axel, but I have since moved it to behind the axel. It might be a muddy mess some day if I need it, but odds are I never will need it.

Why not consider putting the spare tire on a swing-out arrangement attached to the frame/chassis, that also allows the spare to be flipped up horizontally and act as an additional counter space or bistro-type table ... you could even make provision for an umbrella to slide down through the wheel center and provide shade. Somewhere in the archives, here, are several photos of Marjorie Forbe's '55 Benroy that is set up like that, and has inspired countless copies.

Good Luck, and as always ...
