Hello from Wyo

Postby 39Ratrod » Mon Feb 16, 2015 2:34 pm

Howdy all! This site is so inspiring, so much in fact I have begin my own TTT build. We have an old cabover camper that we pretty much retired 2yrs ago. It now resides on a platform, has a small deck and is the place where all my buddys from out of town stay. We bought it 12yrs ago and it sat on the truck for 10yrs straight. The jacks where way too unsteady and not wide enough to remove it from the dually often. Thus our 1-ton has been nothing but a mule for the camper.

It's time for something different. I started a build on a slide in for our 5x7 utility trailer. It's coming along well. Plan to spend many night in the Bighorns in it. Will post pictures soon.

Welcome to the group! There are plenty of people here that will help with questions if you have them. There is a tear drop and tiny travel trailer gathering over in Pinedale this summer. We invite you to join us if you can. The link is below. After the gathering some of us are heading to the Big Horns on our way towards home. I might pick your brain for some camp grounds and any offroad Jeep trails you might know of.

Hope to meet you around the fire!

Steve

Thanks guys for the welcome!

Woodbutcher, I did see the event coming up and hope to make it. I respond on the official thread. As for Jeeping in the Bigs, I know a few great trails to lakes or streams, and combinations there of. That's what really sparked my interest in these little campers. The 1-ton was WAY too big and a 2wd to boot. I have been spending lots of time on the trails doing some tent camping and backpacking, but thought a tiny camper would be awesome! It's usually me and one of the kids, so a tiny camper is the way to go! I will give you the road/trail numbers so you can check them out with GOOGLE Earth and get a better idea.

Vedette, I can hardly wait for some comfortable slumbering at 9000ft!

We hope you can make the gathering, It's a beautiful area. In 2012 we stayed at Ranger Creek off RT 14 near Sheridan. I did a Jeep Jamboree in the area. Just don't remember what those trails were called.

You guys probably did some of the stuff up an area called Red Grade. I am in Buffalo, the town where I-25 and I-90 meet. 35mi south of Sheridan. The Tensleep Creeks, and Baby Wagon Creek are a couple of the options for this area. Crazy Woman Canyon offers some good camping, but the road is mild when it comes to wheelin'. We can discuss it more in July.

Here's one of my Jeeps disguised as a car on Hells Revenge during a Easter Jeep Safari.

That is a good disguise. We are not looking for hard places to wheel, because we have to drive 1K miles home. But places with great scenery and a different view.

Do you want me to put you on the list for July? If so just give me a name.

I would never lead you into trouble. Wheeling is one thing, but dragging a trailer in with you is another. Baby Wagon Creek has AMAZING views, and excellent fishing. Really mild 2 track that opens up to a beautiful meadow with snow covered peaks across the creek. I'll post some pics of the area soon.

You bet, I'm in.

Mick

Here are the pics.

East Tensleep Lake is a pretty tough road. The first section which follows the meandering creek is a little bumpy is all. But once you turn into the trees, it gets tight and rough, probably not a good choice, although beautiful.

Baby Wagon Creek. Mellow 2 track, crosses one very shallow creek, then into the trees until you reach the meadow and that's the end of motorized travel. Lots of place to camp on the fringe near the trees.

Mick, that looks fantastic. Once we get a route figured out and when we will be where, I will send you a private message. I know when we leave out of Yellowstone we want to take the Bear Tooth Highway. But after that we are open. Still waiting to see how many people will be caravaning with us. Thanks for the tips. These are the kind of places we are looking for. If we can make camp somewhere and then hit some trails that the teardrops would not like, that can make for a nice day. One last question. Is there any wildlife in the area we should be concerned about?

The Bear Tooth Highway is amazing! Me and a group of friends used to do the Morrison Jeep Trail out of Clark every Labor Day. You end up on the Bear Tooth. 22 switchbacks in like 2 miles, it's not for the faint of heart. There are definitely some mellow wheeling available for sure.

As for wildlife, I have never seen anything dangerous. Stumbled upon a cow and calf moose one time, scared me more than them I think. But I have yet to see any bear or mtn lions.
