Resetting 12v circuit breakers

Postby bohemian » Wed Feb 18, 2015 1:13 pm

I have a question for the 12v guru's out there.
Do automatic resetting 12v circuit breakers work in just one direction? If they do, would it be safe to say you can't use a resetting circuit breaker in-between your battery and a charger/controller.
Or inline from your tow vehicle to the battery? Do you revers the way it should be hooked up? Batt/Aux or Aux/Batt
Battery's power runs to the controller for 12v power and power is run back to the battery during charging, if the breaker is one directional then some part of the system won't be protected??

Am I just over thinking this

1. DC breakers are often marked with a + at one terminal; at least the larger variety breaker that are NEC approved for use in solar power systems are marked. They are called a polarized breaker. The + end should be connected to the power source. That can be a battery when in a circuit that supplies power from the battery to a device. That source would be the PV panel when connecting power from a PV panel to a charge controller. However when using a breaker in the circuit from the charge controller to the battery we want the + end connected to the battery as that end has a much higher potential than the controller. If the breaker has no markings it might be best to ask the manufacturer.

2. I don't like automatic resetting breakers as if there is a true fault, a short or whatever downstream from the breaker it will keep resetting over and over until either the breaker fails or the battery dies or something else goes wrong.
