Vinyl wrap for siding?

Postby JuneBug » Sat Feb 21, 2015 9:04 am

Came across this TD for sale on Craigslist. I'm wondering if the camo pattern is a vinyl wrap and if so, how durable would it be.
If it isn't vinyl wrap, what might it be?

(a side question. I dragged/dropped this picture from Craigslist onto my computer. Is there a way to load a picture into a post directly from a computer or can a picture be uploaded only from a Web site?)

Yep, just like you would post a pic from another web site. Copy the properties of the picture and then paste them, hi-light and then hit the IMG button ;) Sometimes I'll inbed the URL in the picture, that way you click on the pic and it takes you to the listing. :o

I looked into vinyl wrapping a set of fenders in a faux carbon fiber a couple of years ago ... the pros said that I could expect 5-7 years out of it before it'd need replacing. The cost of wrapping two fenders was $750+ ... the prospect of having to spend that amount again in such a short amount of time didn't appeal to me, and since I could have had real carbon fiber fenders for about the same price, I said "no thanks!". If you feel like you want/need to change your paint scheme every 5-7 years, I guess it'd be O.K. ... but, IMHO, vinyl wraps are geared towards commercial applications where businesses change advertising schemes and logos quite frequently (and can write off the expense).

Good Luck, and as always ...

thanks, all. Even if this particular TD was garage kept, the scalding heat of a Texas summer can melt anything....or break it down faster. Sure looks good, though.

The municipality I work for has tried wraps on a few different vehicles. My experience says that 5-7 years is wildly optimistic. We have had problems with edges lifting in as little as 14 months. I sure wouldn't depend on a wrap to prevent water intrusion.

I've seen that listing and the guy does custom work. He'll do whatever kind of skin you want.

This isn't a wrap per sé, just flat surfaces, they are a lot easier to do, and the vinyl should last a lot longer. With a wrap you have to deal with concave and convex surfaces, so you stretch and shrink the vinyl into them, no matter how good you and your material is (material/brand/inktype is quite a factor) there will be a bit of tension in the vinyl, resulting in lifting sooner or later. On the flat sides however, no tension is brought into the vinyl, and it should last longer. Over here in Holland (think UK weatherwise) colours fading on printed vinyl are a bigger issue.

I'm doing it!

I bought 4 5'x10' pieces of carbon fiber vinyl wrap for about $35 ea delivered. It just came in today! I got a test piece first to make sure that I could apply it without problem. Piece of cake!! I applied and reapplied over and over to make sure it would be agreeable on the third attempt, and I'm convinced I can carefully apply a 5'x10' sheet on my raw aluminum.

I plan to apply it to the sheets first, then cut them to shape. Since I'm 'Floating' the aluminum, al the edges will be covered, so edge peeling should be an issue. I've got high hopes for this stuff!!

Odd the Vinyl simulation is much more expensive than the actual Carbon fiber cloth ... :duh: ...
