I went to the trouble of masking off glue areas with blue painter's tape. Leave the tape back from your finished edge a good 1/8 to 1/4 inch (depending on whether it is a finer cabinetry joint or a larger structural joint) to be sure that none of the raw wood shows. Then after you are done finishing, you can peel the tape off and have a good surface to glue to.
The finished wall will be easier to clean any glue squeeze out off of, if you get to it right away. If you decide to mask your finished edges to protect them from glue squeeze out, be sure to tack the tape on your shirt or pant leg first, or even use a hair dryer or heat gun to lightly warm the tape before peeling it off; otherwise you run the risk of peeling the finish up. (I learned that one the hard way.)
I wouldn't fuss too much over the painted side. Paint covers any glue soaked areas, whereas stain and poly won't.
