Hello from Dallas! Now, about those canvas-backed foamies?

I get the 'foamie' part but not the canvas part. Why use canvas? How is it treated? Do you paint it and/or decorated it? Is the canvas texture still visible once it's done?

We're looking to buy our teardrop--not enough time or stick-to-it-ness to build or restore our own. Instant gratification is our game. But I am loving watching everyone else here go through the process!

Patti,

Foam is strong in compression and needs a skin to impart
greater strength. The skin, normally a canvas, helps
maintain the sculpted form. Other skins are being used and
tested. I've read about cotton and linen fabrics, Paper and
plywood being used.

The structure is similar to a cored and glassed boat construction.
Its been likened to an I beam. The skins separated by the foam
as the web.

I personally applied the canvas with a paint primer after the foam
was lightly scuff sanded. The canvas was then primed before the
addition of 2 coats of exterior latex paint. Hope the explanation
helps.

Others may, likely, explain it better.

Does the canvas supply the exterior or do you cover it with aluminum or something else?

I went and looked at your build pics and saw you and your wife stretching the canvas. Fascinating!

I'd love to see pics of the inside!

The painted canvas does become the exterior, and doesn't require any other covering.
I used a "less coarse" canvas, and the texture barely shows through. Another coat of paint on the sides would certainly hide the texture completely.
The texture shows through on the roof where I used aluminum paint, but it is a nice effect.

Here's where I started the canvasing on the Big Pink:
