Battery fuse

Postby wtcreaux » Thu Mar 12, 2015 9:14 am

Has anyone used these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002INJXO6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If I am reading correctly, I can fuse different wires (and therefore, different fuses) off the block straight off the battery.......

I doubt you need something so robust unless you have a monster electrical system.

My battery fuses (one in TV and one in TD) are 30A auto-style fuses. The one in the TV is built in to the truck's electrical system and fuse panel. The one in the TD is just in an in-line fuse holder at the positive (+) terminal of the battery.

I use 30A circuit breakers. I don't use anything that draws near 300A in the trailer, so anything that big wouldn't blow as quickly as I'd want it to. I prefer the circuit breakers, because the reset themselves.
I use smaller circuit breakers in by panel for most of my circuits.

Size the fuse to the wire ampacity. It does not matter if the fuse is larger than what the connected device uses. It does matter if the fuse is larger than the wire can safely support. More circuits is sometimes better than one one circuit as it makes troubleshooting easier. Usually the only reason to use large fuses is because there is something like an inverter.

Surprisingly, electricity is something I actually know about. Don't make the fuse larger than what the source is rated to deliver. The ultimate purpose of a fuse is to prevent a fire. If you have a circuit rated to deliver 20 amps of current, then do not stick a 30 amp fuse inline and expect to be protected. If you go straight off the battery it can deliver almost all the current you need south of bridging the terminals. But like stated above, don't go higher than the wire can carry. The wiring harness for my trailer runs straight to the battery and I have a fuse inline just before the positive terminal. Careful, don't let the magic smoke out!

You read it correctly, yes it has 2, 30 to 300 amp capable fuses directly off battery ..... Do you need that much fuse capacity, I doubt it...... Have I used one, no, as I have different concept on how to wire DC (battery) circuits...

Nice stuff,
But carry replacements because you will never when you need one find that fuse cartridge 5 min. before closing time at some out of the way auto parts seller.
Fairly expensive too...
But sorry thats unfair, Some folks have a Space Shuttle mentality on building a camping trailer.

Of course I would never use a fuse like this for the good reason my electrical systems are so absolutely perfect there would never be any sort of electrical fault what fuse protection would be desired. .

This is the same fuse used for many dc applications. It will work fine. If this is what you have or what is available then use it. It would not be my choice as it would be difficult to replace, as previously mentioned. I personally use a dc 40 amp resetting breaker as my main breaker.
