What's is the Hardest Part of building a tear drop?

Postby jeremyrschroeder » Tue Mar 10, 2015 9:13 pm

Curious what's is the hardest part of building a teardrop? It all seams like it should be rather easy but curious what is the most difficult and time consuming.

Thanks Jeremy

Well I haven't built one yet, but from what I have read on here. The hardest part is getting started after you decide what you want to build.

For me it's deciding when I'm done.

I will second both those comments... and being in SF right now just carving out enough space to store materials and work without spending a fortune is a real big deal. Much easier to actually build and store in suburbs or country then in city's. That is why so much preplanning is 3D modeling for me.

Motivation. The build process is not too bad once you get into it.

The hardest part about building is building it with pride and quality. Build it as though it is a manufactured teardrop. That means thinking things out and not getting in a rush to finish it. Taking your time makes all the difference in the world. :)

Remember 'Teardrop Time'.......Take your time, you don't have to have it finished NOW.

Hi Jenny, The hardest thing about building my TD was doing it before I found TNTTT! I had trouble finding special parts like my gutters and door hardware/ hurricane hinge. I built my spare tire holder three times and it is still too short. Don't tell. Some things are like that( Multiple attempts involved) but most things went as planned.
Enjoy, Chris

For me it is making the time required to do the actual building.
I always think I can or should accomplish more in the time I have allowed.
The completion date I strive for always sneaks up on me and is usually missed, which is a complete let down, as I always use the completion date as my motivator.
All of the information you require for the build is here on the forum if you look.
But, in the end it always boils down to one thing..........How bad do you want it?
Good Luck with your build!
And remember to build what you "Want" the "First" time!

Finding work space can be a problem. I built the trailer floor first and used it as my work bench. A little low, but big and flat. When I wasn't working on it I could drag the trailer to my unheated garage for storage. When I was working on it, I could drag in into my heated work space (which is just barely big enough.) I would also drag it outside for dusty work like sanding, cutting and routing.

I agree with Chris. (Except the spare tire holder –I throw mine in the back of the Tacoma and leave it there all summer.) It's the hunt for special parts. Doors, hinges, trim, trailer parts, lights. Working on #3 right now and it's a lot easier.

I'm a part-time writer and see an analogy between sitting my butt down in the chair to write and cranking in the shop.

We found a couple things stood out. First was trying to get the hatch right. The Midget has a large hatch and it was so frustrating getting it to sit right. Not only was it awkward working with a piece so large, it was also heavy. We had to rework it a few times to get the curves to line up with the trailer body.

The other thing was getting the right order of the build done. I spent a lot of time looking at it in the garage trying to figure out what to do next. I spent time tearing something apart because I should have run a wire first or put a brace in a wall because later on I would need something to hook a cabinet to. Don't worry about spending time thinking it through.

Amen, bro...

I bought a copy of Steve Fredrick's build manual. It was a major help (especiallcy on the hatch). I still laid in bed for several evenings thinking about the next challenge.

PATIENCE >>> An understanding family.. People will think your nut's, take your time and stay focused. I'm building my first one and I'm into it for 6 months. Finding a place to store all the parts isn't as hard as finding them when your ready for them. I think I fall into the class of overbuilt ( should weigh in around 1400#) but I hope to pass it on when I'm no longer able to use it.

Be proud of your work and it will always be done right.

Well said Kaz
Now that we have discussed what we all think is the "hardest part" we should move on to what we think is the most important part???
Water tight, Water proof, Water tight, water proof, Water tight Water proof!!!!!!!
You should make sure your teardrop is as "Water Tight and Water Proof" as a frogs ass!!! oops......can I say ass on the Forum??
