Side Entrance Tent

Postby Java Jack » Tue Mar 17, 2015 9:52 am

Did not like doing the "Inch Worm" every morning to get dressed so the wife and I decided to modify a Lightspeed privacy/shower tent and make it a side entrance tent.

Here is a brief video I posted after our first trip out with it to Pedernales Falls State Park

https://youtu.be/dvbsJDDaYKg

If was super easy to modify (at least if you have a wife that sews).

Full project pictures are here:

I had sent pictures to the folks at Lightspeed and they were excited to hear about the project. They were kind enough to provide a 20% discount in case anyone else wants to do their own. Use "cs20" when ordering to get 20% off on any orders.

In any case, thought I would share.

Thanks. It worked out great for the trip. It was fairly breezy in the mornings and the tent held up well. I staked down 2 corners and threw duffle bag and bag of hammer/stakes in the corner and it worked great.

Also worked for the middle of the night potty run as well so we did not have to get fully dressed to run to the bathroom.

We may end up making another one for my side.

I can provide exact measurements and explain the steps if anyone would like.

I really like this idea, very well thought out & looks like something I could do.
I've been looking for side tent ideas that we could have on hand when we need it (don't always) that doesn't take up a lot of space & is an easy set up so this could be the answer. I'm all about not having a lot to set up just my camp chairs if possible.
Thanks for the video & photos,
Marie

Thanks.

The Lightspeed tent is super easy to set up. It literally takes about 1 Minute to set up and take down. I have another video I am putting together now walking through our camp set up and as part of the video I cover setting up the side tent.

Lightspeed has a video on setting up this tent here:

https://youtu.be/zOCKMUeekKg

and for the record, no I don't work for Lightspeed nor am I compensated in any way...I just love this tent because it is so easy to use.

These are the two YouTubes Java Jack linked to

:applause:  This looks like a very nice customization of the Lightspeed side tent by Java Jack and his DW. Thanks for posting the ideas. Bookmarking this for the future when I may follow in your footsteps.

Found a link to Lightspeed Outdoors lightspeedoutdoors.com for their Privacy Tent (Changing Room) Product Code: TN-CHGRM which has a list price of $109.99.
Its dimensions are 61 x 61 x 80.7 in (LxWxH). It's tall enough for just about anyone to stand up in.

By using the coupon code "cs20" which Java Jack mentions above the price is reduced ($22.00) to $87.99, with free shipping too.

50campfires.com/lightspeed-outdoors-privacy-tent-overview has a well done Vimeo video demonstrating the features of the Lightspeed Outdoors privacy tent.

Thanks. Also note in one of my earlier posts, Lightspeed was kind enough to provide a 20% discount and said I could share it..."cs20" when ordering will get you the discount.

Actually, ours goes right back in the bag without issue. In fact, I also keep the poles from our Quick Shade canopy in the same bag.

Thumbs up! That is a GREAT modification and provides just the right amount of space and privacy.
Edited to add that the suction cups to attach the "sleeve" to the trailer is pure genius.

Shameless plug for new trail at the park: If you enjoy hiking, my mountain bike club (Austin Ridge Riders) has been working on putting in about 12 miles of new trail for hikers and mountain bikers at Pedernales Falls State Park. The trail follows a limestone outcrop along the 1100' contour. They don't mention it yet on the park's Web page, but the rangers at the entrance station can show you where it is.

Jack, enjoyed your side tent project very much. I bought a coleman instant 8 person
tent and am doing the same thing. Can you ask your lovely wife if she used special
thread (marine grade?) /needle? I'm nervous about sewing into the tent fabric. Eileen

How does the light speed tent handle rain? I've had similar tents and they always pooled and if not drained would stretch, take on more water, and ultimately collapse into an unrepairable mess...

This looks great. For 109, I may take a chance....

Thanks. No, she used regular thread and regular needle. She said she probably should have used thicker thread but it seems to be holding up fine.
