fiberglassing td body

does anyone know if someone ever fiberglassed an entie td body. i have unlimited use of fiberglass supplies. im not talking about making fiberglass sides just 1 or 2 thin layers just to seal it up and aviod using trim moulding.any help is appreciated.

hey Chuckles, welcome to the board...many have done exactly that, one of the most highly sought/thought after set of plans is Steve Fredericks build CD in which he does exactly that for his builds...Many also just encapsulate the whole TD in epoxy (no cloth)...also very popular is the CPES(epoxy based sealer) and Uniflex paint(epoxy based paint) setup from the Rot Doctor...also such things as Armorpoxy and Easypoxy are popular...don't forget pics as you start your build(or before) 'cause we really do luv da pics and it is what we charge for all the free advice you can stand...

thanks madjack so i could just put resin and no cloth.how well do u think it will hold up. and i plan on going with a non tear shape on my first one its gonna be for hunting so it will only have a twin bed in it just for me.the design im looking at is at
so tell me what u think about that design and ill post pics soon will be starting on frame in two weeks

...chuckles, I fixed the link for ya...there has been a long argument/discussion on the merits of using/not using cloth...it is mainly(to me) a matter of preference...one of the most popular tears out there is Doug Hodder's and he used just epoxy shot over with an automotive clearcoat....

by the way, iff'n I were you, I would seal the edges with FG cloth and do the rest with epoxy, similar to what Doug Hodder has done...

thanks for fixin the url .just noticed u are from louisiana im from bridge city 10 mins from new orleans. and since i can get the fiberglass for free i think im gonna use it .it will make it stronger and not add to much more wieght.thanks for the quick reply and all the future help.

thanks didnt make the design myself got it from the net somewhere.gonna paint it black to match my truck. a 2001 s-10 step side with 2inch body lift and a2 inch suppension lift with 30 by 9 by 15s on it.i want to get matching rims and tires for the rugged tear.the truck has realtree grafix along the bottom of the truck.want to put on the tear. and before anyone says black gonna be hot it is being built for hunting only which in the winter the black will help with warming it up

Hi Jude,

I've done my trailer in glass and epoxy. There's no doubt that it will make a great trailer but it was a lot of work. I glassed my underdeck storage boxes, the walls, top, and doors. The only thing left is to build and glass the back hatch.

There is a bit of a learning curve if you haven't done glass work before.

Chucklehead....having a roof rack....I would definately use some glass tape on the joints on the roofline, extra weight up top will want to work on the side/roof joint...after the epoxy has cured on the tape..you can sand/grind off any of the high spots and coat out with more epoxy...for me...I only use cloth on the hull of a boat, on a tear, and we've had this discussion on the forum before, my preference is just epoxy directly on the wood...when applied correctly, it'll sand out and you can paint it with a finish like a car if you want..It does take several coats of epoxy with sanding between coats, and it does need to be painted or clear coated for UV protection...I've got 6 years on 1 boat, no maintenance, 2 years on another boat, no maintenance, and 1 year on a tear with no maintenance...all in mohogany finished "bright" Doug

heres what I'm doing with foam board,epoxyand fiberglass. fender is all carved pink foam then glued to the side with epoxy. the whole thing is covered with biaxial mat, 2 layers of glass and epoxy. then its sanded ,filled with bodyfiller and primed.
