Woody Trim Methods

Postby oldsmokey » Sun Mar 22, 2015 5:19 pm

I'm struggling a little with figuring out exactly when and how to apply the woody trim, and thought I'd ask some of you who have gone before me. How thick is your trim? How did you fasten it? and lastly, did you add a roundover along the edges, and if so, how did you handle butting one piece into another at a 90 (it would butt into the roundover and look funny)? Thanks!

I used my Kreg pockethole jig. I made the woody frame as a separate piece. Ran a router around the edges with a very light round over, just to take the sharp edges off. The finish will hold better if the corners not sharp. Then I finished all the wood on both sides. Then screw the woody panel on from the inside.

looked like this before assembly....

Wow, I'm impressed! Looks like this method allowed you to cover some fasteners that ran from the outside in, iI'm guessing to the spars? Is your trim 3/4" thick?

Yes the trim is 3/4" and I did cover the fasteners that I used to attach my 1/4" side to the main frame work.

I've done it 2 different ways.

The first one I used 2 sheets of Plywood for each side and made a cut out of the raised wood and attached it to the solid sheet.

And the second I stick built.

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...
