Shore power urgent help needed

Postby dales133 » Wed Mar 25, 2015 8:56 am

I've just purchased this http://greatlakesskipper.com/furrion-f3 ... hore-power on ebay and I know nothing much about them and I'm trying to work out witch female plug I need and if I need a separate cover.
The ebay store want me to give them a part number so they can combine shipping...witch is expensive.
They don't want to make the call on the part incase they get it wrong I guess.
Any help apreciated so I can get it sent.
Cheers dale

The clue to what you need is in the NEMA number. Look at the specs on the page you linked to. See where it states 30 Amp: NEMA L5-30. You need an end that will plug into that with the same NEMA L5-30 number. Home Depot, Lowe's sell them where I am (USA). It would be numbered as a L5-30C (C for connector) in those stores. FYI, the part that fits on an end of a cord with the prongs sticking out of it would be a NEMA L5-30P ( P for plug). The seller should have been able to tell you that info, IMO.

part at Lowes

It is rated for up to 125 volts... are you in US or Canada or someplace else?

Australia.... electrician said that if it's rated 30amp 125v it would be fine for 15 amp 240v.
I'll get a link to what I thought was right

This is data....

30A-125V (NEMA L5-30R) LOCKING CONNECTOR

(note the "R" in NEMA number)

This is what "recepticle" end will look like...

Basically for most of the world, its a 30A "twist lock"....

I have one other option to remove the twist lock part and shoehorn in a AU style 3 pin 15 amp plug
I saw one today that I've ordered incase that should work.
It's realy more the look I'm after, I didn't want an ugly plastic one
http://greatlakesskipper.com/electrical ... hore-power

That's a fair range of parts.

This is what an rv inlet looks like here with ought all the cover and bow

Be careful with the configurations. It "may" work with different voltages/amperages but they all have specific prong layouts to protect you from inadvertently hooking up to a wrong voltage/amperage.

To each his own. But I've never been to a campground where the power pole didn't also have a standard 110 receptacle right next to a twist lock. I've never used my 110 30 amp adapter. But I have been to places where there was no twist lock :)

In a teardrop, I'm not sure how you could seriously be limited by "only" having 20 amp. I guess a coffee maker and AC might be a problem. But that easy to fix....if you're using the coffee maker turn off the AC. You're already outside anyway... I guess you could turn on a space heater and the AC at the same time....but why? To keep the AC from short cycling? OKAY I've done that. I still didn't blow a breaker. It didn't help. My AC still short cycled.

We have a shore power inlet (http://www.go2marine.com/product/98459F ... et-15a.htm) that works perfectly.. I see a lot of people spending a huge amount of money on electrical systems...is a power control center really necessary? I'm not sure it is when your are looking at what is little more than a power strip on wheels with a parallel 12 volt system for lights and fans.

Again to each his own, but this seems like overkill to me.

Found a neat page when looking for some stuff....

http://internationalconfig.com/default.asp

May help someone with standards/specifications issues with electrical plugs/receptacles...

Look here....

http://shopping.lmgtfy.com/?q=nema+l5-30r+receptacle

Best deal may be here...

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_ ... ema+%2Caps

Best price I have found...

http://www.amazon.com/Superior-Electric ... ma+l5-30+r

You might be better to just bite the bullet, by the time and effort spent and cost of new parts and converting it, it will cost more then just shelling out the dollars ...

By the way, not a GURU, just have enough knowledge to keep myself from getting hurt or dead... Its all having respect for what you are working with...

Thanks Dale I'll check those links out.
I ended up just getting them to send it and then i can be sure of what I'm dealing with when it gets here.
I know where my limitations are and it's right where the electrics start! Just as soon hand that part over to the experts
