Running wiring harness through tongue framing

Postby javajaws » Wed Mar 25, 2015 4:47 pm

So I'm scratch building my own trailer. I'd like to run the 7-plug wiring harness through the tongue so it exits under the trailer somewhere from which point I'll split out from a junction box. This is mostly for cosmetic reasons - keep it clean looking, less wires dangling around the frame, etc. but also to keep it protected.

Question is: What's the best way (and location) to get the harness into the tongue framing? Drill a hole on the bottom of the main tongue frame member? Is there any sort of commercial grommet or anything for this purpose to keep the frame from rubbing the wiring?

Any pros/cons to running it in the frame vs underneath?

Thanks in advance.

I've done it both ways.
I now prefer to run the wires under the exterior of the tongue/draw bar through several angled pieces welded to the tongue/draw bar to look like this ^.
Easy to get to, no drilling into the cross member, and very serviceable.
I place my junction box in the center of the first cross member.

How did you attach the cable? Zip ties?

I found a generic rubber grommet in the drawers in the screw isle at lowes.

My cable goes through the angle iron pieces that are welded to the tongue/draw bar.

True enough.

So the angle iron is on the bottom in a V (not a ^)?

Since my build is more offroad oriented I'm thinking running the cable along the bottom is probably not a good idea. :)

I'll probably have to stick to inside the tongue or along the side

Put it inside a length of conduit anchored to tongue....
Got to be a million ways to clamp/weld conduit to tongue...

Not a real fan of drilling large holes in tongues, as it may cause stress risers, and eventual breakage...
