FOR MY SAFETY please post a "KEEP back 1000' " sign on your trailer
I think that's fuzzy logic. Tongue weight isn't determined by where you attach the hitch ball to the TV. Tongue weight is a static measurement of the trailer tongue's weight.

The hitch is a lever. The length of the lever is the distance from the TV's rear axle to the ball attachment point. As far as the TV is concerned, adding length to the lever is no different than adding tongue weight. Whether the receiver hitch can handle the added stress is another matter but normal safe following distances should be adequate.

I use to have a 10.5 camper on my truck and had an 18" extension that i pulled about 3000 LBS trailer with. it did fine but i rigged a chain to the top of my bed to support it for those heavy rollers you hit on the freeway over passes.

I have the problem with the jack interfering with the tailgate. Very annoying! But I don't like the idea of an extended hitch. It seems to me that would have some negative consequences with handling or the margin of safety.

The solution I'm contemplating is completely different. How about a swing away trailer trailer jack like this one:

Remove the factory jack and weld this on to one of the two sections of the tongue.

I have considered one of these jacks to solve my problem, but discarded it because it could interfer with the tongue box I was planning on for the CT and also it might make it difficult or impossible to use a Weight DistributIon Hitch later should I want one. Maybe the WD hitch could be used depending on where the jack is mounted, but I could not visualize how.

Just to update, the extended hitch I bought works great. I can't tell the difference at all except that I now really can turn as sharp as I want, as long as I want. I took a short weekender trip with the trailer, up and down hills, around some tight curves, Wyoming freeway speeds (80!), and narrow two-laners. Even had some wind. She followed nicely with no increased sway, and no noticeable increase in rear end sag. :) Now granted, the hitch I bought is only a few inches longer than the one I had, but still, I can open and close the tail gate worry free now. It meets my criteria as inexpensive, quick, and simple.
