Attaching battery box to tongue

Postby Dalorin » Thu Apr 16, 2015 11:45 am

All,

I need to mount my battery box as far back on the tongue as possible. Most people I've seen use two pieces of angle iron attached between the tongue channel and then mount the battery box between them.

How is the angle iron attached to the tongue channel? Do you have to weld this on or can you drill and bolt down with 3/8 carriage bolts? Somehow drilling through the tongue seems like it would hurt the integrity of the tongue.

Thanks!

Square shouldered "u" bolts maybe ????

BLACK..FRAME RED U BOLTS BLUE BATTERY BOX

Here it is nestled between the frame setting on a light gage steel plate. When you bolt the box to the plate use large fender washers to disperse the load and I put in a small piece of 3/4 blue foam to protect the battery case (not the battery box ) the battery bottom from the bolt heads.

My trailer has two pieces of angle iron welded on to support 2 x 20 lb propane cylinders. Factory no doubt. I use U bolts to attach a bicycle carrier across the "A" in front of the angle iron.

Drilling thru the flat horizontal part won't hurt the integrity all the strength comes from the vertical part

All,

Thanks for all the good information.

@bonhenrey I'm going with your solution because it's impermanent. Someday I may want to reconfigure the things on my tongue. Thanks for the help!
