Cost at campground

Postby Kayaker1971 » Wed Apr 22, 2015 8:21 pm

Hi all, I'm well along my TT build but was wondering what campground fees are for a TT vs tent camping? What the cheapest "accommodations" choices for touring with these. I dont want to spend like 50 a night just to park!

Thanks

In Indiana, the on difference is electricity. A non-electric site is 15, electric is about 30. Electrics also tend to be close to shower houses and flushables. That's worth $15 alone to me :)

In Ohio state parks there appears to be a difference of $5 between electric vs non electric.

Most of the time you can use a tent site that has a big enough parking if you want.

Ya gotta watch the tent spots though as many FS and BLM tent sites I see don't have room for more than 1 vehicle and have the actual tent site a short walk away. Hard to tell unless you have seen it or at least have seen good photos, or something. Generally FS sites (in the west where we camp) are non electric and on the low end of the price scale.

We ask for tent sites with no hook-ups. I tell them I have a teardrop and most places know what it is!
Every campground is a different price.
Private campgrounds are more expensive than state parks.
Fee depends on where you are staying.

I've camped in a couple of tent sites where the driveway was long enough for one car and wasn't even close to level. The area for the tent was behind the picnic table and fire ring and I couldn't have gotten the TD in there. I asked for another site both times.

I mostly get electric sites because they usually aren't much/any more expensive and they are more often level enough for the TD.

If you are 62 or older you can get an America the Beautiful pass that gives you up to 50% off camping fees in all National Forests. I've read that COE honors it too but I've never tried that.

My senior pass as noted in the America the Beautiful Pass site, only cost me $10 and allows me the entry at no cost. I purchased it at a NPS toll booth on the Skyline Drive in Virginia. I have used it only once so far and that was for parking at a federal hiking parking spot. I do hope to use it more this year.

My senior pass allowed me to camp for $3 per night at the Tonto National Forest in Arizona this winter. Some of the campgrounds have solar heated showers and flush toilets, although absolutely no electricity in any of the campgrounds, which was fine for my solar setup.

I live out west in Idaho. The our electric company has several campgrounds that are next to reservoirs that have plenty of electricity. They charge $10 for a tent space and $16 for rv spaces.
