Newb from CO

Postby Delta99 » Tue Apr 07, 2015 5:48 pm

I everyone, newbie here from Colorado. I have been lurking for a short while, and finally got my account going! I started my teardrop build last weekend. It's going to be a project, and I will make progress as money allows. It's going to take a while! I have lots of questions and looking for suggestions, so I'll ask from time to time. I'm building a kenskill type trailer, and it will basically be built to the "Grumman 2" plans which I found here. Thanks for having me, and thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see another from Colorado. I read your other post on getting a title.

Delta99 wrote:To get it titled in CO, I first have to insure it, and provide proof of insurance. Then I have to make an appointment to have a LE officer come out and inspect the trailer. Then I have to apply, and wait for a title. At this point, I've already done everything I didn't want to have to do, so after all that, I'll just get the plates here, and spend an arm and a leg. My dreams of $10 registration through the mail have been shattered. :( Oh well

I don't think it is that hard or expensive to register a trailer in Colorado. I built my frame so all I had to do was fill out the home built form go to the DMV and give them a copy of the metal, lights and axle receipts and then I got a temp plate $6. I then went a weighed it at a truck stop which cost $10. You only need proof of insurance on your tow vehicle but not the trailer. I then drove to my inspection appointment. They looked at it checked the lights and in less than 10 minutes gave me paper work to go get title and license. Back to the DMV and $62 later I had it registered, got a small metal VIN number plate to rivet to my frame, and a license plate. I was now legal to go camping. The title came in the mail about a week later.

If you are using a Harbor Freight trailer it should of came with the paper work needed to get it registered.

Good luck with your build

Thanks for the info Dan! The trailer did come with paperwork, and my name is on the recipt, so it is a "bill of sale." I guess it won't be so bad. Is there a price difference for registration between utility and camper? I was thinking of doing it now while it's still a flatbed utility trailer

:D Welcome to the Teardrop Playhouse, Delta! We have met and camped with some great folks from Colorado over the years. Sounds like you've got your plan well under way and just keep adding to your building fund each week.....

I registered mine as a utility trailer(cheaper) in Colorado the same way Dan did (Easy Peasy), I figure its just a bit more utilitarian now than some.

My only recommendation is to find a home built trailer nearby and make a friend. There will times when it's nice to actually see bits and pieces close up and see how some else built it. Also good for what works and what doesn't.

Otherwise, its nice to see the Colorado group getting bigger and bigger, I ran into another teardrop a couple weeks ago while camping.

Good building, have fun

Thanks everyone. I've been trying to register my trailer for a while now, and it's a WAY bigger nightmare than I imagined. After making over 10 different phone calls, I finally just went to the county government center to speak to a person and get some answers yesterday. I have to call the CSP to schedule an inspection. The only time I am allowed to call to make the appointment is on mondays at 8am. So I have to wait until next week to even make an appointment. Then I have to go back to the government center and get a temporary tag so I can bring the trailer to the CSP precinct for them to look at it. Then I have to go back to the government center with all the paperwork to apply for a title. If you are in CO, I recommend NOT getting a harbor freight trailer. The red tape is not worth it. This morning while filling out some of the other forms I have to bring in, I noticed that the Harbor Freight cashier typed my VIN wrong on the recipt. So my "bill of sale" has the incorrect VIN. I called the store, and they told me to go to their website. I can't do anything from there. I called customer service, and after being transferred twice, I finally got someone to help me. They are going to mail me a new recipt with the correct info on it. So I have to wait a week to get my "bill of sale", then wait a week to make an appointment. This whole process is wearing me down!

I'm sorry to hear you are having so much trouble, my homemade trailer was super easy to register but that was back in 2006 and I am guessing some rules have changed since then. Glad I did mine when I did.

Well another little update. I called the state patrol at 8am as I have to, to schedule my appointment. The line was busy. I called every 30 seconds for over an hour. Busy. They finally answered the phone at 9:15, and said I had to call next monday at 8am! Anyone want to buy a titleless trailer, in like-new condition? I've had it! It is not possible to register a kit trailer in CO
